This is a huge victory for public art. The press will grab onto the size of the award and the fact that it was spray can graffiti art that resulted in this award. But the deeper story is the push and pull between artists and landowners. That is a complicated relationship, and both sides need to respect the position of the other, or the consequences can be dire. The court stated: "If not for Wolkoff’s insolence, these damages would not have been assessed. If he did not des...troy 5Pointz until he received his permits and demolished it 10 months later, the Court would not have found that he had acted willfully. Regarding the artists, the court stated that they have conducted themselves with dignity, maturity, respect, and at all times within the law. https://news.artnet.com//judge-awards-6-million-5pointz-la

Willie Herron and Leah Moscozo removing tags from Kent Twitchell’s Olympic murals today. Thanks to all of our donors. This is truly your money in action. Despite our official-sounding name, MCLA is not affiliated with the City. It is funded only by donations. And the City, Caltrans and artists let us do our job with no complaints or red tape. These elements combine to protect some of the greatest public art in the world.

This morning's unveiling of the restored "Moratorium -- The Black and White Mural" by Willie Herron and Gronk at Estrada Courts. This marks the completion of the last project started by Isabel Rojas-Williams at MCLA. It was great to see her today along with Willie, Leah Moscozo and Gil Ortiz. (Group photo by Evan Skrederstu of Uglar Works.) Thanks to Councilman Huizar, the LA Dept. of Cultural Affairs and HACLA.

Thanks to Google and Telemundo / NBCUniversal for putting on this great event. Also on the panel were Wilmer Valderrama, Stephanie "Chiquibaby" Himonidis and Angelica Vale.

Tomorrow is the last day to submit comments to the Army Corps of Engineers on the Prado Dam Bicentennial Freedom Mural. Their preliminary review states that they do not find the mural to be eligible for the National Registry of Historic Places. The California State Historical Preservation Office is already questioning some of the methods that led to that finding. If you would like to see that mural preserved, please submit your comments to: [email protected]. Thanks. http://friendsofthepradodammural.com/

If you are around town this weekend, consider stopping by Al's Bar to celebrate the return of a Kent Twitchell monument to Ed Ruscha. The original was painted out ten years ago and resulted in a landmark lawsuit and settlement involving the U.S. Government and other defendants. The resulting public awareness was a turning point in the history of public art in LA, leading to greater respect for these works and the recognition that they needed to be legal once again. This is a long way of saying that this is more than just another mural going up, and we hope you can join us to celebrate Ruscha's return.
