As we get up to speed in 2021, this may be a good time to resolve to find new homes for the things you no longer need or want. Our friends at Zero Waste Marin have some ideas about how you can give reusable items a second life: https://zerowastemarin.org/rehome
Big thanks to the Marin Independent Journal for this article about countywide efforts to collect and recycle Christmas trees. IMPORTANT: please remember to remove all decorations, lights and stands before you put your tree out for curbside collection!
Let’s recycle those trees! We will collect your Christmas Trees curbside on your regularly scheduled collection day January 4 - January 15. Place the tree by your compostable cart. -Trees over 6 feet in length must be cut in half to fit in our trucks. -If placing in your compostables cart, the lid must close.... -We will not pick up trees that are flocked, decorated or with tree stands attached. For more information (including drop-off options) visit https://marinsanitaryservice.com/support/holiday-calendar/
Today’s festive Where Does It Go, Joe? Wednesday: can I recycle Christmas decorations like lights and ornaments? Unfortunately, neither item is recyclable! And some types of lights are hazardous and just go to Household Hazardous Waste. Be sure to check the Where Does It Go Joe? app for all of your sorting questions! Download the app for free at these links: App Store: https://api.recollect.net/a/MarinSanitaryService/waste/ios Google Play: https://api.recollect.net//MarinSanitarySer/waste/android
If you’re like us, you’ve noticed even more cardboard boxes piling up lately! This is the perfect opportunity for utilizing one of the 4Rs, Reuse. While we can recycle cardboard boxes, an even better use would be to keep it for the next item you need to ship! So next time you get a cardboard box, consider if it would be useful for sending or wrapping your next present!
Holiday Service Announcement! The only two days that we will not have normal service are Christmas Day (Friday 12/25) and New Years’ Day (Friday 1/1). Service for both of those days will be Saturday instead. We wish you all a healthy and happy holiday season!
Time for Where Does it Go, Joe? Wednesday! Something our customers ask us frequently is whether or not meat, bones, and eggshells can be composted. The answer is YES, absolutely! Common advice for backyard / at-home composters says to avoid these items, but because we haul our material to an industrial compost facility, our customers are welcome to put those items in your green carts! For more valuable sorting insights, be sure to download our free Where Does it Go, Joe? app via the links below: App Store: https://api.recollect.net/a/MarinSanitaryService/waste/ios Google Play: https://api.recollect.net//MarinSanitarySer/waste/android
California's AB 1826 requires many businesses to subscribe to composting. See how Sessions Rise condos came into compliance with the help of one resident, her HOA and Marin Sanitary Service. https://zerowastemarin.org/one-marin-businesss-success-wit/

We’re bringing you another Where Does It Go, Joe? Wednesday! This week’s question: can I recycle Styrofoam? Unfortunately the answer is no: regardless of the little triangle symbol, many plastic and petroleum-based products cannot be recycled. Be sure to double check what can be recycled by downloading our free app Where Does It Go, Joe? Find those links below! App Store: https://api.recollect.net/a/MarinSanitaryService/waste/ios Google Play: https://api.recollect.net//MarinSanitarySer/waste/android
Did you know that the average American generates 25% more waste than normal during the holiday season? To reduce our waste, we try to give experiences instead of things, or give gifts that will be truly compostable or recyclable at the end of their useful life. Finally, we like to get creative with wrapping paper! The traditional stuff has to go to the landfill, so we like to use newspaper, brown paper, a pretty cloth or scarf, or a reusable bag to wrap our gifts. How do you reduce waste during the holidays?
