An Increase in mobility doesn't always mean a decrease in Pain/ Performance And Just because we have mobility issues, doesn't mean we're going to be in pain, now or in the future - This is relative to each individual and the task they need to do. I believe as long as we are connected and own the mobility we currently have - for the task we want to do.... The body should have no reason to feel a threat, hence have pain or lack of performance. So while we're on the process of gaining more mobility, make sure to keep working on bettering the relationship of how we use the body for the movements we want to perform. The funny thing is, if the relationship and connection is better, mobility comes naturally, with much less effort and force. I'm all for that What do you prefer? There's such a big difference between muscles activating under an EMG, vs Feeling the muscle I always talk about the latter. Literally every case of shoulder issues I've come across, the client's have a disconnect on how they can engage the LAT in specific positions Can we find stability and activation of the LAT when Pulling, pushing, rotating, throwing, punching, ground-based work, In ALL angles?... That's step one, now how does it apply with the entire body in all movements, on a passive level? That, in my opinion, is the ultimate stability of the shoulder, or any other muscle in the body. Did the latter make you feel like you need to be more careful when you're running? Would you be more aware of your surroundings, be more careful with each step and absorb more impact with your legs and core? If yes, then words changed the way you move - That's the power of cues.... I realized that our Intent or Narrative is more important than the movement itself. Most of us are mindlessly moving and working out without paying attention to our intent. The Fitness Industry is young, It typically relies on Extrinsic cues, Push your hips back, Drive off the heels, open the chest etc. But the eastern movement arts use a lot of descriptive/ narrative-driven, intrinsic cues like, Open the arms like a lotus blossom etc. I believe both are equally important to learn from and can be used in our everyday way of training and life. Because they will both change the way we move, in drastically different ways, and the combination will grant us better awareness and intent over time. If you know me, you know I'm a barefoot advocate and try to be barefoot as often as possible. This was inspired by Emily Splichal when I met her 7 years ago. Before that, I had Plantar Fasciitis for years and never knew what that even was, I just knew my foot hurt like hell getting out of bed in the morning and had no idea how to relieve the pain. Until I started training barefoot and wearing more minimal shoes, things shifted really quickly.... "I have bad knees" - Yes, Because that's what my parents and doctor told me. That belief can be passed down generations and the entire family has "Bad Knees" A Negative Neuro Tag is formed and Identity is created.... In so many of these cases, it's easily salvageable by teaching proper movement mechanics to remove that negative neuro tag, once removed, pain is gone and better movement is achieved. Other times, there's such a deep bond between that identity, pain becomes a part of them and the belief is so strong that it takes so much effort for them to break free from that association of "Bad Knees" - Other forms of therapy is needed to help with that. It's time! @ryan_moves and I have been thinking about what the heck can we do online that will help benefit you guys. It's definitely a challenge since both Ryan and I are so hands-on, we decided to launch this beta program to see how you guys respond ... Each day will have a different theme/topic of what we’ll be working on as an online group. The more engagement we get for a certain class, the more classes we'll create. I love not knowing what will happen. It's what makes things interesting. Continuing to worry about the worst-case scenario on a daily basis just makes that future a reality and makes the present unbearable to both ourselves and others. The more I grow, the more I realize that it's not just about "thinking positive" and saying "everything is going to be alright" ... It's taking time to process things, really let the body and mind absorb whatever is going on. Then continue to learn, teach, motivate others which in turn, helps me expand and process things even faster. I realize the difference between Chronic vs. Acute Pain (mental or physical), is how quickly we are able to process information and tap into a more positive state of the unknown. As in thinking like "I have no idea what will happen, let's try it out and see" instead of "Oh my gosh, I have no idea what will happen, I'm so screwed" If there's nothing we can do to help with the current situation, do what we can to help with our mind, which in turn, will help the situation more.
