BIBLE WORD OF THE DAY... Faithful, Faithfully, Faithless 1: (Strong's #4103 Adjective pistos pis-tos' )... a verbal adjective, akin to peitho (see FAITH), is used in two senses, (a) Passive, "faithful, to be trusted, reliable," said of God, e.g., 1 Corinthians 1:9; 10:13; 2 Corinthians 1:18 (AV, "true"); 2 Timothy 2:13; Hebrews 10:23; 11:11; 1 Peter 4:19; 1 John 1:9; of Christ, e.g., 2 Thessalonians 3:3; Hebrews 2:17; 3:2; Revelation 1:5; 3:14; 19:11; of the words of God, e.g., Acts 13:34 , "sure;" 1 Timothy 1:15; 3:1 (AV, "true"); 4:9; 2 Timothy 2:11; Titus 1:9; 3:8; Revelation 21:5; 22:6; of servants of the Lord, Matthew 24:45; 25:21,23; Acts 16:15; 1 Corinthians 4:2,17; 7:25; Ephesians 6:21; Colossians 1:7; 4:7,9; 1 Timothy 1:12; 3:11; 2 Timothy 2:2; Hebrews 3:5; 1 Peter 5:12; 3 John 1:5; Revelation 2:13; 17:14; of believers, Ephesians 1:1; Colossians 1:2; (b) Active, signifying "believing, trusting, relying," e.g., Acts 16:1 (feminine); 2 Corinthians 6:15; Galatians 3:9 seems best taken in this respect, as the context lays stress upon Abraham's "faith" in God, rather than upon his "faithfulness." In John 20:27 the context requires the Active sense, as the Lord is reproaching Thomas for his want of "faith." See No. 2. With regard to believers, they are spoken of sometimes in the Active sense, sometimes in the Passive, i.e., sometimes as believers, sometimes as "faithful." See Lightfoot on Galatians, p. 155. Note: In 3 John 1:5 the RV has "thou doest a faithful work," for AV, "thou doest faithfully." The lit. rendering is "thou doest (poieo) a faithful thing, whatsoever thou workest (ergazo)." That would not do as a translation. To do a "faithful" work is to do what is worthy of a "faithful" man. The AV gives a meaning but is not exact as a translation. Westcott suggests "thou makest sure (piston) whatsoever thou workest" (i.e., it will not lose its reward). The change between poieo, "to do," and ergazo, "to work," must be maintained. Cp. Matthew 26:10 (ergazo and ergon). 2: (Strong's #571 Adjective apistos ap'-is-tos ) is used with meanings somewhat parallel to No. 1; (a) "untrustworthy" (a, negative, and No. 1), not worthy of confidence or belief, is said of things "incredible," Acts 26:8; (b) "unbelieving, distrustful," used as a noun, "unbeliever," Luke 12:46; 1 Timothy 5:8 (RV, for AV, "infidel"); in Titus 1:15; Revelation 21:8 , "unbelieving;" "faithless" in Matthew 17:17; Mark 9:19; Luke 9:41; John 20:27 . The word is most frequent in 1 and 2Corinthians. See BELIEVE , INCREDIBLE , INFIDEL , UNBELIEVER , UNFAITHFUL. (In the Sept., Proverbs 17:6; 28:25; Isaiah 17:10 .)

BIBLE WORD OF THE DAY... PRAYER (Strong's #1783 Noun Feminine enteuxis ent'-yook-sis ) is translated "prayer" in 1 Timothy 4:5; see INTERCESSION. Notes: (1) Proseuche is used of "prayer" in general; deesis stresses the sense of need; it is used sometimes of request from man to man. (2) In the papyri enteuxis is the regular word for a petition to a superior. For the synonymous word aitema see PETITION; for hiketeria, Hebrews 5:7 , see SUPPLICATION.... (3) "Prayer is properly addressed to God the Father Matthew 6:6; John 16:23; Ephesians 1:17; 3:14 , and the Son, Acts 7:59; 2 Corinthians 12:8; but in no instance in the NT is prayer addressed to the Holy Spirit distinctively, for whereas the Father is in Heaven, Matthew 6:9 , and the Son is at His right hand, Romans 8:34 , the Holy Spirit is in and with the believers, John 14:16,17 . "Prayer is to be offered in the Name of the Lord Jesus, John 14:13 , that is, the prayer must accord with His character, and must be presented in the same spirit of dependence and submission that marked Him, Matthew 11:26; Luke 22:42 . "The Holy Spirit, being the sole interpreter of the needs of the human heart, makes His intercession therein; and inasmuch as prayer is impossible to man apart from His help, Romans 8:26 , believers are exhorted to pray at all seasons in the Spirit, Ephesians 6:18; cp. Jude 1:20; James 5:16 , the last clause of which should probably be read "the inwrought [i.e., by the Holy Spirit] supplication of righteous man availeth much' (or 'greatly prevails' ischuo, as in Acts 19:16,20 ). "None the less on this account is the understanding to be engaged in prayer, 1 Corinthians 14:15 , and the will, Colossians 4:12; Acts 12:5 (where 'earnestly' is, lit., 'stretched out') and so in Luke 22:44 . "Faith is essential to prayer, Matthew 21:22; Mark 11:24; James 1:5-8 , for faith is the recognition of, and the committal of ourselves and our matters to, the faithfulness of God. "Where the Jews were numerous, as at Thessalonica, they had usually a Synagogue, Acts 17:1; where they were few, as at Philippi, they had merely a proseuche, or 'place of prayer,' of much smaller dimensions, and commonly built by a river for the sake of the water necessary to the preliminary ablutions prescribed by Rabbinic tradition, Acts 16:13,16 ." * [* From Notes on Thessalonians by Hogg and Vine, pp. 189,190.] See more

Satisfy us in the morning with your unfailing love, so we may sing for joy to the end of our lives. Psalm 90:14 What morning routine do you most depend on to get your day off to a good start? A warm shower? Your first cup of coffee? Revising your to-do list? Moses, the author of Psalm 90, wasn’t anticipating a refreshing shower when he pulled back his tent flap to face another day in the hot, barren wilderness. His to-do list usually had one thing on it: walk until God says... stop. Moses began each day with something many of us are missing: an unwavering assurance of God’s unfailing love. His confidence in God’s love and care was all he needed to face each day in the wilderness. We have the same promise that Moses had. Nothing we do or say will alter the passionate love God pours out on us. In our waking moments, before our minds become cluttered with concerns, before our feet hit the floor, we can pray, Lord, satisfy me today with your unfailing love. When God’s love becomes our greatest source of satisfaction, joy will carry us through our daily stresses, and God will put a song in our hearts . . . to the end of our lives. LOVING FATHER, thank you for your promise of unfailing love. Impress on my heart a deeper awareness of your love and care for me. Give me eyes to see all the ways you express that to me throughout this day. Forgive me for seeking satisfaction in material possessions, family, friends, and work. I pray that you will become my greatest source of satisfaction and joy. Your relationship with God ought to bring you more joy, satisfaction, and pleasure than any other relationship, activity, or material possession you have. Henry Blackaby (b. 1935)

Fight the Good Fight Fight the good fight for what we believe. Hold tightly to the eternal life that God has given you, which you have confessed so well before many witnesses. 1 Timothy 6:12 In Paul’s final instructions to Timothy, he wants to impress on his young disciple the need to hold fast, stay the course, fight the good fight. Paul knows that the road ahead of Timothy will not be easy. Wherever the gospel is preached, there will be battles; there will be persecution.... But Paul knows the greatest battle is not with flesh and blood. It’s against the evil rulers and authorities of the unseen world. The battle is over what we believe, and those who persevere will win the prize of eternal life promised to those who confess Jesus as Lord. Does the battle around you continue to rage no matter how hard you fight? Have your enemies gained the upper hand? Have you grown weary or lost sight of the prize? God did not call us to fight our battles alone. When we seek God in prayer and acknowledge our weakness and weariness, he will fight the battle for us. Someday we will stand at the gates of heaven and gaze in wonder at the prize in front of us, and the battles behind us will become a fading memory. HEAVENLY FATHER, help me not grow weary in the battles I face but continually seek you to fight the good fight on my behalf. Give me faithfulness and perseverance. Thank you for your promise of eternal life in your presence. And though this world, with devils filled, should threaten to undo us, We will not fear, for God has willed his truth to triumph through us. The prince of darkness grim, we tremble not for him his rage we can endure, For lo! His doom is sure: One little word shall fell him. Martin Luther (14831546)

Bible Word of the Day! Abba 1: (Strong's #5 Noun abba ab-bah') is an Aramaic word, found in Mark 14:36; Romans 8:15 and Galatians 4:6 . In the Gemara (a Rabbinical commentary on the Mishna, the traditional teaching of the Jews) it is stated that slaves were forbidden to address the head of the family by this title. It approximates to a personal name, in contrast to "Father," with which it is always joined in the NT. This is probably due to the fact that, abba having practically become a proper name, Greek-speaking Jews added the Greek word pater, "father," from the language they used. Abba is the word framed by the lips of infants, and betokens unreasoning trust; "father" expresses an intelligent apprehension of the relationship. The two together express the love and intelligent confidence of the child.
