Antioch resident Pete Davies had been trying to buy this particular 1961 Austin-Healey for years. It was owned by one of his parents’ neighbors in Danville. There was a lot of sentimental value there. I found out about it in ’85 and went over to ask him about it and told him if he were ever interested in selling it to let me know, Davies explained. I would ask him once or twice a year if he were ready to sell it. Always ‘no.’ Meanwhile, the car was sitting outside in the ...weather deteriorating. The owner had planned to restore it ‘someday,’ but he didn’t have the knowledge, the facilities or the money. Davies kept asking, and finally one day the neighbor said he would sell it. He went in to tell his wife he was going to sell it to me but came out a half-hour later and said he couldn’t sell to me. ‘My wife won’t let me,’ he said. This went on for several more years, then one day I was talking to his son, who said, ‘Let me work on this.’ About two months later, in 2011, Davies bought the car for $3,000. Three days after the purchase, Davies showed up with a trailer to pick up the Austin-Healey. It was a mess, he said. Thirty years sitting outside. I opened the trunk, and three rats stood up. The smell was awful. It was disgusting. I brought it home and sat on it for about a year. This is Davies’ hobby. He has restored eight vehicles, but this one is special. He too had some sentimental attachment to Austin-Healey. What happens next? How was 2020 for a racing enthusiast? Well, here's a genuine account by Kent Prather. We thank him for representing Moss and for going out there and following his passion for racing! "2020 was indeed a year to try and forget. As a racer, I have always viewed trips and challenges as adventures offering a chance to see new places and meet new people. When we go to the race track, we try to stay off the interstate as much as possible and see the countryside. This year presented ...new challenges and precautions. COVID-19 changed everything! Everyone now knows about wearing masks and sanitizing everything. We lost many early 2020 race opportunities as states and cities mandated social distancing and shutting down businesses and events. However, there were still a few early races that were not cancelled. The "Hawk" or the Weathertech Vintage Races with Brian Redman at Road America was open to us. We have been going there for the last 20 years and wouldn't miss it! We usually race four times a year, but this year races were sanctioned based on a city's permission, space available in hotels and open restaurants. We only raced twice, but also went to four SCCA Championship events. When we went to St. Louis for a race in the spring, the governor didn't give the green light to the weekend event until the last minute . The event was very COVID-19 protected with strict guidelines. Keep in mind racing is an outdoor sport and tracks are privately owned for the most part and this should not be an issue. Never the less, large gatherings were dropped and social distancing and masks are the smart way to not spread the virus. Our race in Texas at COTA (Circuit of the Americas) was very similar despite being later in the season and tracks had the year to work on proper safety practices. I am also involved with the SCCA as a worker. I drive the pace car for these events to give back to the club for the 40 years of fun it has given to me. We cleaned the pace car with wipes and wore our masks the whole time as a mandated procedure. Smart actions by competitors and workers allowed us to continue to do what we love (racing sports cars) while keeping the events safe."
