It's a great opportunity to learn the ins and outs of competitive surfing from a very knowledgeable and experienced source. I signed up for all 5 sessions. Before Roxy and the generalization of the word Wahine The original Westside Wahines Born and bred on the Westside of Makaha. We were a nonprofit group of... native Hawaiian women surfers, mothers, aunties that cared for our beach and aina. I guess more input is needed. Although the word Makaha roughly translates to fierce, we were far from that. Imagine surfing with a group of Hawaiian women. The laughter, joking and sharing and exchanging of waves. F-bombs uttered by teens were given stern looks and Sorry Aunty was spoken. We held the first all women’s surfing contest at Makaha (We were the first, no matter what claims there be) Inviting all ages to participate free. From bodyboarding, longboards and shortboards. Glen Moncata provided free lunches and provided our judges, Mahalo so much to Glen of Quiksilver We also provided trash cans for Makaha beach, held clean-ups and tried to show native Hawaiian girls that there were other outlets for health awareness and cancer screening. BAD POP UP... BAD SURFING Here's how to fix it. I'm giving you a process to determine what's broke, and how to fix it. ... It could be bad technique, it could be lack of flexibility, it could be inadequate strength, or it could be a combination of all of the above. A "pop up" which is the wrong name IMO, it should be called a Walk Up, is a sport SKILL. Skills are built upon foundations of movement and movement characteristics (strength, power, flexibility, etc). You may just need to work on the Skill and learn better techinque. Or you may have immobile joints that limit your ability to perform the skill. You may need to build more strength, power, or mobility (control of range of motion). Bad pop ups equate to bad surfing. Bali's 'Crown Jewel': Padang Padang, was in fine form on the 9th of September - and since Kelly Slater was in town, it was no great surprise to see him make his... way to the lineup for the morning session. There was a stacked cast of barrel aficionados, and although it was one of the more congested lineups that we've seen this year, the sets were consistent and well stocked. With the tide moving in during the day we decided to go film the Bombie at Uluwatu - so if you enjoy watching bomb sets and heavy beat-downs, you're going to be stoked with tomorrow night's edit.
