This is a great resource for how to set social media boundaries during this crazy season and just any time in life! From a MOPS email sent to me: Creating healthy social media boundaries: ... Ok, it’s time to fess up. We can admit at the end of the day when our screen time usage pops up, we immediately cringe a bit as the percentage appears. Especially in today’s political climate, it can feel as though you have to stay informed with world updates moment to moment. Our screen usage can feel justified. But, let’s be honest, the majority of the time we are reaching for our phone is to escape our reality. All of us are in need of a digital detox. Social media is a blessing and a curse wrapped up in one. Here are some positive suggestions for social media usage: Gut check When you are scrolling are you feeling inspired to do something positive, or are you feeling bad about yourself? If the answer is the latter, put the phone DOWN! Also, when you’re about to grab your phone, stop and ask yourself: Is what I’m going to do important or just a method to escape reality? Stop comparing As moms, it’s very easy for us to look at another mom and desire to do what she’s doing. Here’s the thing: there are times when we are reaching and striving to do something that we weren’t wired to do in the first place. The comparison trap must stop. Give yourself permission to be you. Tap into YOUR passions and YOUR gifts, not someone else’s. Health awareness The rise of social media has connected our global population more than ever, even during a pandemic. However, our reliance on social media can have a detrimental effect on our mental health, sleep, attention span, self-esteem and human connection. Educate yourself on these negative effects and use that as a motivating source to model healthy boundaries, especially around your kids. Set a time limit Think about your day. When is it crucial to have your phone attached to you as if it’s another appendage on your body? If there isn’t an important call you’re expecting, put your phone out of your immediate reach but within earshot. Schedule time when you are allowing yourself to scroll. There are apps that will keep you accountable to the time limits you set for yourself. This isn’t a shaming game. We know current events have increased screen time for all. However, we also know now is the time to Decide To Rise out of our old habits and set the example for the little people around us. They’re like sponges. Let’s give them something good to soak up! xoxo, MOPS
