I know it’s Friday, but for some of us that means another long, painful weekend. Perhaps with a significant other who is mistreating you or hurting you in ways you just can’t take anymore, but you feel absolutely stuck. I just wanted to post to my many friends here on Facebook to say I am here for you if you need to talk, or if you need help getting out. There is support for you and sometimes it’s just a text, FB message, or phone call away. In light of this pandemic and all the trauma it is inflicting on so many of us, I am offering phone or Zoom consults for anyone in need of professional help. Family is everything, right? Well, everyone’s family is different. This is mine. I am very grateful for my family. I remember a time when I wondered if I would have a family of my own one day. I was always so hopeful, yet anxious about it. Fast forward, having a family isn’t always what we expect it to be. Sometimes life throws crazy curve balls at you and you find yourself wondering if you’re stuck and not sure how to climb out of the hole you’ve found yourself in. ... Here’s a tip for you guys: it takes a minimum of 6 months before any divorce is finalized in CA. The reason for this? The courts want you to try and work it out! But why??? Because guess who might have to end up supporting you and your kids!! If you are not sure what direction you’re headed in, there are ways to get the process started without committing to the end of your marriage. Just be sure to take steps to protect yourself and your kids in the meantime because in CASE you do work things out (which is great!!) you don’t want to have done something that could set you back. You may be wondering who I am....so here are 10 fun facts about me: 1. My name is Isolde (pronounced ih-soul-day), which is a German name from the famous opera, Tristan and Isolde. She was like a medieval Juliet 2. No, I’m not German. Just my name is. My family is from Paraguay and Argentina . I am a first generation Gringa. ... 3. I was raised in a tiny town just north of Los Angeles, called Agoura Hills. Growing up, we had a population of about 30,000. We had one high school. Everyone knew everyone, and I adore my hometown. 4. I am a *double* Bruin, Class of 2005 (Bachelors) and Class of 2009 (Juris Doctorate). 5. I am married. Even though I divorce people for a living, I am a hopeless romantic and a big believer in marriage. I love being married. 6. I am obsessed with cheese and wine . In fact, I recently devoted myself to learning the craft of cheese mongering (yes, it’s a thing) and I dream that one day I will be able to make fabulous cheese platters for lots of fabulous parties when I’m not practicing law 7. I am extremely passionate about women’s rights and supporting victims of domestic violence. I have devoted countless hours to volunteering at women’s shelters to help women in need get access to a lawyer. I also volunteered for many years at an organization devoted to getting *teen* victims of domestic violence free legal representation. I think teens are the most vulnerable and sensitive to violence. It is an age group that is underserved and I hope to change that. 8. I love salsa and bachata dancing I’m not the greatest but I’ll never stop trying! Maybe one of these days I’ll convince my husband to dance with me. 9. I recently got nominated as a Rising Star by Super Lawyers. It was such an honor. Only the top 2.5 % of all lawyers in the state receive this award. 10. I have spent 10 years devoted to practicing law, and virtually my entire career has been litigating family law cases. Well let me tell you a quick tip for surviving the rest of the week.....if you or someone you know is in an abusive relationship (they don’t even have to be married!!!), he or she can file for immediate protection with a Domestic Violence Restraining Order (DVRO). It becomes effective for 3 weeks (it’s just temporary) but it can also become permanent. The abuser will have to c...ompletely stay away from the victim’s residence, car, and place of work as well. The victim can seek protection of any animals (kitties and puppies need protection too!!). He or she may even be required to keep paying the household bills in the meantime! It’s Free Tip Friday!! How much does it cost to get your divorce or paternity papers filed (in CA)? The fee is currently a whopping $453. That’s if you went and filed the papers YOURSELF. However, if you are contemplating a divorce or separation, and you’re not working, you may qualify for a fee waiver from the court. Then it’s FREE to file and move on with your life!!! ... Just remember to ask about this so that you can be ready with the list of items that the court will ask you to provide to show that you qualify. Today’s goal: to remain centered, positive and above all else, calm PATIENCE is something I have really struggled with, and my clients do as well. It’s so hard to be patient when you are just done with your spouse or significant other. Sometimes you just want to *poof* disappear and pray they will just leave you alone. But it’s not always so simple. Sometimes they just won’t go, can’t go, refuse to go, let alone leave you in peace! Fun fact: did you k...now that the State of CA requires a 6-month cooling off period? This is so that you can *hopefully* work things out and get back together. After all, the State of CA doesn’t want to have to support you with their resources! They have enough money troubles! So like it or not, if you’re getting a divorce, you must learn to practice patience The change you are seeking won’t always happen overnight, but if you can be patient, you will get to the end. Does that mean you sit around waiting??? Heck no.
