If you have less agility and determination than a panther, it may be time to consider an arborist to inspect your trees. Okay, we aren’t going to sharpen our claws and shimmy up there but simple visual inspections can give us a lot of information about tree health, pruning needs, and possible ailments. Monarch can put your mind at ease with routine assessments and help you make decisions to protect your leafy assets. Arborist-in-training Goodcat Wilson is having supervised ja...guar time on the patio, three feet up from the ground. He is not allowed to eat any wildlife. He is also afraid of heights, so kindly try to seem impressed. #monarch #tree #climb #arboriculture #treecare #arborist #cat #urbanjungle #consulting #fieldwork #hoa #urbanforest #forestry #kingofthejungle #panther #environment #ecosystem #gooutside #community #horticulture #plants #catsofinstagram #tuxedocat #climb #treework #landscaping #botanical

Now, which tree was it that needed pruning? Or treatment? Or removal? If you have trees (a couple of trees or a LOT of trees), the best way to care for them is to keep track! Tree inventories help you understand and manage your urban forest, communicate tree care, and plan your budget. Monarch inventories include: GIS location of each tree (those cool pins on the map, color coded by species and assigned a unique ID)... Stats: species, height, diameter, health rating based on a level 1 assessment Scheduling for pruning objectives, treatments, removals, replacement recommendations Current photos to track growth and health Need an inventory? Reach out and we’ll get you details! #monarch #tree #trees #arborist #arboriculture #treecare #mapping #arboristsofinstagram #pruning #fieldwork #inventory #propertymanagement #community #hoa #commerciallandscaping #plan #budget #urbanjungle #urbanforest #forestry #homeowner #management #grow #plants #horticulture #consulting #botanical #streettrees #landscape #ecosystem

If you're tired of Citrus, might I suggest branching out and choosing an underrated fruit favorite like this mulberry, or figs and pomegranates? All perform wonderfully in our area with frugal water. While evergreens are always popular, they lack this impact of new life springing forth after a quiet winter. Deciduous fruit trees belong in a complex, contemporary, and dynamic landscape that celebrates seasonality.

A serious case of Chunk in the Trunk. You never know what Lead Arborist Evin Lambert will have rolling around in her whip. This decayed tree section is brought out for examination at the office while Senior Consultant Brian Faris looks on. The issue in question is only semi-understood so far (pending post mortem), but the tree was growing at a 45 degree angle and had a root from an adjacent tree girdling its buttress roots on the tension side. The growing conditions give us a lot of clues and this material will help tell the whole story. Word to the wise: always carpool with the arborist.

What value might this branch hold, you ask? Our lead arborists explains that the ideal tissue sample contains healthy, dying, and dead material all in one snip. Soil samples are also taken from around the base of this oak tree for wholistic testing.

Aleece is our newest team member and no stranger to the field of landscaping - welcome to the Monarch team! She is rock-solid in all that she does and is already a valuable resource to customers and coworkers alike.

Ever wonder how giraffes are grown? Agave attenuata blooms majestically for such a humble plant, pushing up these massive stalks which are impossible for bees to resist. Adapted for low water, tolerant of lousy soil, with no thorns or spines to attack the horticulturist, this one is a great slope addition. They are also forgiving when it comes to transplanting, meaning just a few plants can give you a steady supply of pups for years to come. Remove the spent plants after they have flowered and allow their progeny to fill whatever space you have. While they may not actually pupate into those spotted giants of the Savannah, you can still pretend that the fence is there for your safety.

This legacy Ficus benjamina at La Floresta waits until it’s fully decorated to finally succumb to Armillaria (fungus) and high wind events. Total tree failures often have co-morbidities, making it difficult to precisely predict when tragedy will strike.

Cotton candy in its natural habitat, what a beauty. Satisfy your sweet tooth with Muhlenbergia capillaris 'Regal Mist', especially effective around playgrounds and family-centric amenities. This grass is adapted for low water, takes full sun, and maintains a small stature (typically 2'x2' excluding blooms). Native to Mexico despite that German genus. There's also a white variety if you're planning a dreamy, cloud-like landscape for your pet Pegasus. Just saying.

Meet Andrew Chase, Resource Management Consultant at Monarch Environmental. Not only does he have an entire alphabet of qualifications but he's asking the real questions on how irrigation affects your community. ... For example, Santa Margarita Water District Customers should know that SMWD has recently elected to suspend ALL rate changes for 2021 due to COVID-19. 2021 rates will stay the same as 2020, a critical fact to be encompassed in your budget as soon as possible! We're so lucky to have Andrew on our team, looking after every drop of water for our clients.

Great minds at work. Arbor Pup Luna (accompanied by her mom, lead arborist Evin Lambert) and Cali (board member in training, @eyost1961) are networking at a tree planning walk at The Bluffs in Newport Beach. If I had photoshop, they'd have mojitos.

Tough day in the life of a Monarch consultant! Our Vice President, John Germer, is rewarded for a morning inspection hike with a gorgeous view at Montbury in Lake Forest. Opuntia cactus (prickly pear) is especially happy here with tempting fruit. Bemus Landscape, Inc. Keystone Pacific Property Management

A pre-pre-pre-pre butterfly! Asclepias (milkweed) is the host of Monarch butterfly larvae so of course the Monarch Environmental office hosts the host. These gorgeous plants have fed several generations of very hungry caterpillars already and we're happy to have them all, even if they make lousy interns (you can teach 'em to make coffee but they're never going to answer your e-mail.)

Hey California, did you know we have a native rose? Rosa californica is blooming now with a sweet fragrance and ferny foliage. Its habit is wild and elegant, as we Californians tend to be. It’s a vigorous grower and taming it into the landscape takes a deft hand. Worth adding if you’re brave. Can you identify my spider friend? Arachnologists represent, please!

Everyone celebrates the Arbutus for its cute red fruit, earning it the common name Strawberry Tree. However, the year-round beauty of its stunning bark is the true workhorse in the landscape. Wild, dynamic textures coupled with a gorgeous array of colors compliment so many plant palettes. Apple green, buttery yellow, cinnamon, apricot - just try to find a landscape it can’t infiltrate and elevate! Yes, pretty urn-shaped flowers in pink and white. Sure, sculptural habit. Okay fine, those cheery fruits attracting adorable birds. But that bark? Astounding.

Welcome to #birdwatching with Monarch! As a horticulturist, I know painfully few birds. Here’s one I’m sure of though, Strelitzia nicolai or giant bird of paradise. It’s as weird as the standard orange B.O.P. you know and love but much bigger (up to 30’!), oozing with blood-like sap, and definitely housing undesirable critters. Of course I adore it. Why this isn’t the official flower of Los Angeles, who can say. Other birds I know: flamingo, peacock, red-tailed hawk, ostrich, pigeon, and pterodactyl. How about you?

Arles is just beautiful this time of year. Or so I imagine, these Van Gogh-worthy blooms are residing in Rancho Mission Viejo. So willing to grow, sunflowers are often used to teach kids about germination. What a great time to revisit this classroom classic if you’re bored and have general access to sunshine!

Ouch, my retinas. If you don’t value your rods n cones but you do value hummingbirds and the stunned admiration of your neighbors, Russelia equisetiformis may be for you! AKA firecracker plant or fountainbush, this one is a serious bloomer (there are other colors!) that takes heat well. Totally tubular, dudes.

What’s this?! A guest for #pollinatorweek, homegrown at the Monarch office on our Asclepias population but currently working remotely. Want to host your own beautiful pollinators? Get those non-invasive, native species in the ground! Nobody was devoured. Goodcat is just in awe and hoping that one day, he too will pupate into something elegant and useful.

This is basically a kitten that buzzes around keeping the planet from dying. Bees are so fuzzy and adorable and heroic, I can’t even stand it. This one is visiting some slope-planted Myoporum, a landscape classic.

Luna the #arbor pup is all tuckered out after celebrating #pollinatorweek in the field. Sporting her pollinator bandana, she helps mom Evin (Monarch’s lead #arborist) with the finer points of fieldwork, such as looking adorable and not chasing snakes no matter how tempting it is. Good work, Luna!
