Saturday, May 8th, more than fifty Monarch Beach Sunrise Rotarians and Dana Hills Interact Club members gathered and carried out the Environmental Avenue of Service’s first local project cleaning the Dana Point Harbor of litter and debris on kayaks. More than twenty kayaks were generously donated for 2 hours by Westwind Sailing (Diane Wentzel) and Pure Watersports (Tim Boyd). The fact that these two wonderful kayak providers are at opposite ends of the harbor required coordin...ating 2 Teams capably captained by Jasmine Riyhani and Vittorio Ferrario. John Coffman, Chairman of the Avenue of Youth Service, coordinated more than 25 Interact students who volunteered their Saturday morning for this important service to our community. Quite an assortment of litter was picked up using pickers donated by the City of Dana Point thanks to the assistance of Mike Killebrew, Dana Point City Manager and Past President of the Rotary Club. The debris was collected into sugar cane biodegradable and recycled plastic bags each kayaker handled on board their kayak. Additional Rotarians turned out and scoured Baby Beach for debris and litter on the beach and in the grassy areas. After returning the kayaks to Westwind Sailing and Pure Watersports, the Club assembled on Baby Beach after to sort the junk from the recyclable items and enjoy the beautiful day. Several bagsful of material were then taken to be disposed of in the way safest for the environment. Our Environmental Service Committee wish to take our hats off in thanks to Diane Wentzel and Tim Boyd who made this project a reality. Kevin Islas, Rotary District Administrator, shared with us the different options for club membership types to help accommodate the many needs and varying schedules of those in our club and in our area. Two new Memberships types are: Corporate Memberships- allowing alternates from a business or corporation to attend in the place of the primary member. This was designed to attracts new members who might otherwise be unable or reluctant to join because of the weekly commitmen...t. RI hopes to attract new corporate leaders and create new partnerships in the community Family Membership-allowing spouses or children to be in place instead of primary member. Flexible options have been created to keep up with the times! See more
