On this week in 1956, "living legend" contralto Marian Anderson was invited by the MSO to perform in recital. Anderson is famously known for her 1939 Lincoln Memorial concert, that was performed in front of a crowd of more than 75,000 people, after being denied Constitution Hall as a venue due to racial segregation. Mancini is an integral part of Modesto, not only did he help found the MSO, he was an award-winning band director at Modesto High School, Modesto Band of Stanislaus County - MoBand (originally Stanislaus County Boys Band), and Mancini Bowl in Graceda Park is named after him.
