Please join me in keeping in your prayers all who were victims of the mass shooting this morning at the VTA facility in San Jose. May their family and friends ...be consoled during this difficult time. May we continue to pray and work towards ending this senseless gun violence in our country. Most Reverend Daniel E. Sadly, but in the hope of Our Risen Lord, the Franciscan Friars of the Province of Saint Barbara announced the passing of two Franciscan Friars, both of whom served the community of San Miguel at different times. Father Joe Zermeno OFM passed away August 13, 2020 in Tucson, Arizona. He was 89 years old, 57 years Professed and 52 years Ordained. Father Clifford Herle OFM passed away September 3, 2020. He was 92 years old, 72 years Professed and 65 years Ordained. Please keep Father Joe, Father Clifford and their families in your prayers at this time of loss.

Dear brothers and sisters in Christ, It is with great joy that I announce today, September 1, 2020, the appointment of Very Reverend Miguel Grajeda to the Offic...e of Vicar General for the Diocese of Monterey. Fr. Grajeda will assist me as Bishop in the governance of the Diocese. Fr. Grajeda will continue to serve as the Vicar for Priests, as he assumes this new office. Fr. Grajeda was ordained to the priesthood on July 5, 1997. He has served in the following parishes: Mission San Luis Obispo de Tolosa (San Luis Obispo), Sacred Heart (Hollister), Christ the King/Cristo Rey (Salinas) and St. Patrick (Watsonville), prior to becoming the Vicar for Clergy for our Diocese in January 2019. Please keep him in your prayers. Also, in gratitude, I want to thank Fr. Peter Crivello, pastor of St. Angela Merici (Pacific Grove) for his many years of service to the Diocese of Monterey and to my predecessors in the Office of Vicar General. Sincerely in Christ, Most Reverend Daniel E. Garcia Bishop of Monterey

August 20, 2020 Dear brothers and sisters in Christ, I invite you to join me in praying for our brothers and sisters throughout our State and in our Diocese who... have been and are presently affected by the recent fires. In our diocese alone the CZU, River, Carmel Valley and Dolan fires have already caused profound damage to property, persons and the environment. Hundreds of people have already fled their homes fearful of the unknown. Likewise, several of our parish sites have been evacuated due to the close proximity of the fires. Although it may not be clear to us, it is at times like these that we are called to not lose sight that the Lord is with us even amidst the uncertainty of the moment. You and I are called to come together as the Body of Christ, to pray for each other, even if we cannot physically gather in each other’s presence. Let us also earnestly pray for our first responders who place themselves in harm’s way to protect all of us. As we approach this weekend, please be mindful that your pastor may need to make a decision whether or not to have an outdoor mass at your parish due the poor air quality in your area because of the fires. I urge you to remain in contact with your parish to see if any sudden changes to the mass schedule will be made for the upcoming weekend. Be assured of my prayers today and always. St. Junípero Serra pray for us! In Christ, Most Reverend Daniel E. Garcia Bishop of Monterey
