This weekend’s local spotlight is one of San Diego’s most popular (and most beautiful) places Torrey Pines. The Torrey Pines most San Diegans talk about is actually two parks (Torrey Pines State Beach and Torrey Pines Natural Reserve, which sits on cliffs above the beach). The reserve is a coastal wilderness of pine forests and sandstone canyons that house a series of easy, family-friendly hikes with amazing ocean views. The beach is a local favorite among surfers and bea...chgoers, offering a large stretch of beautiful, clean beach. When visiting, you may also see a number of hang gliders & paragliders, who fly from the higher cliffs to the southern part of the beach. Red Tide events happen globally and are caused by algae bloom that can sometimes be toxic to sea animals and humans. They usually produce these stunning, bioluminescent (glowing) views, as the phytoplankton become agitated by the waves and emit a neon blue glow. These events are inconsistent but most frequently happen in early spring or late summer. Today is #worldmentalhealth day and we are here to make a stand for normalizing mental health and making treatment available to everyone, especially our veterans and active duty servicemen and women. As a little background on this issue, here are some stats on veteran mental health: 20% of the vets who served in either Iraq or Afghanistan suffer from either major depression or post-traumatic stress disorder according to the RAND Center for Military Health Policy Research. 19....5% of the vets mentioned in the above statistic have experienced a traumatic brain injury. 25% of returning Iraq and Afghanistan veterans showed signs of substance abuse disorder, according to the National Institute of Drug Abuse. Many service members and veterans avoid seeking treatment for their mental health due to personal embarrassment and shame, long wait times to receive treatment, stigma associated with mental health issues, lack of understanding or awareness, and more. While more can always be done, there are resources available to veterans and service members suffering from mental illness. By now, you’ve heard us talk about Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac’s implementation of the Adverse Market Fee on refinances during COVID-19. Well, this is your last heads up! The tax had been postponed, but it’s once again upon us. If you’ve thought about refinancing your mortgage, the time is NOW! Starting October 15th, any locked refinance will have that fee included.
