Midland Animal Clinic announces the retirement of its Founder, longtime Poway resident, and veterinarian, John Augustine. Dr. Augustine attended Veterinary School at Washington State University from 1966-1970, following his service in the First Infantry Division Medical Service Corps during the Vietnam War. After moving to the quaint country town of Poway in 1972, Dr. Augustine and his wife Diana established the original Midland Animal Clinic in a small building on the corn...er of Midland and Aubrey Road. The practice flourished as a Mom and Pop business for many years, providing excellent medical care to both large and small animals. After 36 years the hometown veterinary practice outgrew the small building and in 2008 Midland Animal Clinic built the much larger, state of the art hospital across the street from Old Poway Park. During his 47 year career Dr. Augustine has always been there for his clients. His family recalls him frequently bringing home sick animals to watch over throughout the night and making house calls. At all hours of the day or night, Dr. Augustine was on call, willing to talk with clients or provide them with the loving compassionate care that he became known for. Dr. Augustine not only is a respected veterinarian in Poway, but served the community as a 4-H leader, was on the board of directors of the Animal Trust Sanctuary in Ramona, and served on the Poway Rodeo Committee. Dr. Augustine was also active in the Poway Chamber of Commerce for many years and later became the chairman of the Old Poway Planning Committee, which formed the guidelines for the Old Poway area as we know it today. In addition, he was on the board that founded the Emergency Animal Clinic in Mission Valley and later a North County Animal Emergency Clinic. Currently, Dr. Augustine is one of the longest standing Eucharistic ministers at St. Gabriel’s Catholic Church, where he is also a Knights of Columbus member. Dr. Augustine feels confident leaving his clients and patients in the expert hands of his partner and the doctors at Midland Animal Clinic, some who worked there prior to attending Veterinary school and returned as doctors to work with him again. Dr. Augustine has always considered his clients to be an extended part of his family, which is why he practiced veterinary medicine for so long. While he feels grateful to have had such an amazing career doing what he loved, he is most thankful for the relationships that he has developed with his clients and their pets over the past 47 years. With his decision to retire, Dr. Augustine would like to thank all of his clients and friends for blessing him with so many years of love and happiness. The doctors and staff of Midland Animal Clinic are hosting a drive-through celebration on November 8, from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. at the clinic for those wanting to wish him well. See more
