Dry and Windy with Locally Elevated Fire Weather Conditions Tuesday through Thursday. Frosty Interior Valleys Low Temperatures. US National Weather Service Eur...eka California KEY POINTS Dry and Windy Afternoons through Thursday with elevated fire weather conditions for portions of the interior. Unseasonably chilly morning low temperatures Wednesday & Thursday; locally frosty interior valleys. ________________________________________ CONFIDENCE Lake County (& locally eastern Trinity County) HIGH Confidence Northwest winds each afternoon Tuesday through Thursday sustained 10 to 20 mph with some gusts to 30 mph in exposed areas. Afternoon humidity 20 to 30 %. Good overnight humidity recoveries. MODERATE Confidence Elevated fire weather conditions will be more conducive to fire spread should any starts occur. Vegetation is exceptionally dry for mid-May, but overall fuels are not expected to be sufficiently dry for rapid fire spread or particularly large fire development. Interior Humboldt, Interior Del Norte, Lake, Trinity and NE Mendocino County Valleys HIGH Confidence Locally frosty in the coldest interior valleys Wednesday morning, with more widespread frost on Thursday morning. LOW Confidence Locally sub-freezing temperatures some Trinity County Valleys Thursday AM. ________________________________________ DETAILS Windy and progressively cooler weather continues to be on tap for northwest California this week. While winds will ease in many locations during most of the overnight and morning hours, each afternoon onshore northwest to westerly winds will pick up through midweek. Low temperatures will likely be frosty in the usual cold spots like Hayfork and Ruth Lake starting Wednesday morning, with more expansive frost across many interior valleys on Thursday morning. There may be a few showers mainly around the northern interior mountains late Wednesday or Thursday, and even around the Yolla Bolly mountains Thursday or Friday afternoon. Snow levels actually drop to around 3000 feet Wednesday night and only rebound to 4000 feet or so on Thursday, so our higher mountains may actually see a few flakes. Otherwise, there is little hope for any rain for the rest of the area. Meanwhile, vegetation and fuel moisture conditions remain unseasonably dry across much of the interior, particularly around Lake County. Elevated fire weather conditions will be possible with the aforementioned winds, particularly late Wednesday around Clear Lake, where a period of sustained winds close to 20 mph will be following afternoon RH bottoming out in the 20s. Thankfully, RH recoveries will remain fairly good, particularly in the valleys where winds will ease during the overnight and morning hours. Brisk conditions will return on Thursday, followed by easing winds Friday and into the weekend. For the latest forecast updates, visit weather.gov/eka.
