We are confirmed to begin the process of assembly and installation of "Ascension" (Coco) in Bombay Beach, CA. This effort will begin will be coordinated as a part of a Fabrication class offered through Cal Poly school of architecture scheduled to begin February 1st. The class will meet on location every other weekend and will be tasked with site development, as well as the erection of the installation. The goal is to complete the work by the end of March, in time for the B...ombay Beach Bienniale. In an attempt to offset the costs and lessen the financial burden on the students, we have initiated a fund raising effort which I would like to bring to your attention. The entirety of the proceeds of this fundraiser will be devoted to the installation expenses, including transportation, lodging and meals for the student work crew. This will undoubtedly be a unique and invaluable experience for those who participate. Eliminating some of the associated costs and simplifying the process of participation will no doubt open the possibility for many more students as well as ease the production. As a token of our appreciation for your generosity and contribution we have created a series of commemorative items to mark this special occasion as well as acknowledge your kindness and consideration. Each of the gift items were individually, using a combination of digital and analog techniques and processes. Although the items are a part of a set, each individual piece is distinctive, captivating and entirely unique. The particular aesthetic and the process for making these gifts was developed at MIA for this specific occasion and will not be reproduced in the future. Please visit the site below and consider contributing to this effort. Your help and contribution will not only enable a unique and meaningful experience for the students who build the installation, but also the many visitors who will see and experience the result in the years to come. https://www.gofundme.com/f/coco-goes-to-bombay-beach your generosity is greatly appreciated. I am happy to announce that our large Origami Crane installation "Ascension" (Coco), is to be installed in Bombay Beach near Palm Springs, and is to remain on exhibit for the foreseeable future. The development of this opportunity has been fast and unexpected. The greater objective however has been about a decade in the making. Although initially for a different purpose, Coco was conceived of, designed, and constructed with this end goal in mind. To be of service and fulfil...l its purpose as a harbinger of peace and prosperity. Coco was the inaugural work of The Crimson Society, "an organization of dedicated Individuals who aim to use design and creativity as a means of effecting a greater social and conscious change". I believe that the manifestation of this potencial, here and now, is providential and an attribute of our times and condition. The paragraph below was written in 2009 as a part of a non-profit application: "We plan to find land that is of low value to others and use recycled shipping containers as the material to build cheap housing for the homeless. Once we have the shelter in place, we then will find industries in which the homeless can specialize to provide services and/or goods that can either be sold to the general public at large or be used within the City." Although these words were written a decade ago, the goals have not changed and in a way all the efforts since then have been in preparation for, and in prelude to that greater objective; To be of service. Coco has been and will continue to be an emissary of this mission. Her arrival in Bombay Beach will signify a major step in making her accessible to the public and expanding the reach of her message. To commemorate this event, MIA will produce 12 plaques, each marking the details and location of the installation. The Plaques are made of CNC machined Komatex and include a relief of a portion of the city map. There is also a scale-accurate representation of Coco at the exact location on the city map relief. The GPS coordinates are also included on the plaque and the entire item is poured with lightly tinted resin to protect as well as provide color and depth variation. These plaques as well as some other gifts will be available as a part of the fundraising efforts which will be announced later. See more
