The Mexican American Bar Association Mourns the Loss of its Former President, the Honorable Victor E. Chavez Monday, November 2, 2020 Los Angeles, California The Mexican American Bar Association of Los Angeles County (MABA) mourns the passing of former MABA President and founding member, the Honorable Victor E. Chavez. Judge Chavez served as MABA President in 1971. He not only was a MABA leader for many years, but was well-recognized throughout the Los Angeles l...egal community. He left an indelible mark in the legal profession and his loss will be profoundly felt. Judge Chavez served in the United States Air Force and received his undergraduate degree from Loyola University. While working as an insurance representative by day, Judge Chavez worked his way through Loyola Law School. After his graduation, he worked as counsel at Early, Maslach, Price & Baukol. This was the beginning of Judge Chavez’s highly successful career as a trial lawyer, first as a defendants’ lawyer and then as a plaintiffs’ attorney. After a long career as a very successful trial attorney, he was appointed to the Superior Court by Governor George Deukmejian in 1990. After a very short time on the bench, he was elected by his peers to serve as the Presiding Judge in 1999 and 2000. During his term, the Municipal Court and Superior Court were unified. Judge Chavez’s strong leadership guided this critical period of transition. Judge Chavez passed away on Friday, October 30, 2020, at the age of 90. In addition to his wife Marlene, he is survived by five children, including Justice Victoria Chavez, and four grandchildren. Judge Chavez was a proud founder of the Cowboy Lawyers Association and enjoyed riding his horses well into his 80’s. He will be remembered by his colleagues, peers, and the greater Los Angeles legal community as a man of great faith, integrity, character and friendly quick wit. Judge Chavez had a true zest for life, which he shared with his many friends and beloved family. As further information regarding plans to celebrate and commemorate Judge Chavez’s life and legacy become available, MABA will share them with its members. For children, education is often the key to open the door to a better life for themselves and their families. However, school systems have been complicit in perpetuating systemic racism through the criminalization and marginalization of Black, Indigenous, Latinx, immigrant and other children of color through policies and practices ranging from discriminatory discipline; inequitable school funding; English-only initiatives; euro-centric curriculum; tracking; and investing in law enforcement over the arts, health services, and social-emotional supports, among others.
