Remember the classic math problem about two trains leaving two stations, with Train A going 80 mph and Train B traveling at 70 mph? When did Train A actually meet Train B? Students in Mr. Mills' math and science classes (above) use actual trains to solve this kind of rate, distance, and time equation, as well as doing displacement calculations. See, math really can be fun.

Congratulations to Zoie R. Claire C., and Luis R., whose essays were named as winners in the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) "Patriot's Pen" Contest. This national contest asks middle school students to reflect on a different patrtiotic theme each year. This year's topic was: "Are You Proud of Your Country?" The three were recognized by the California VFW, District 23, Post 1726 on Saturday, January 14. Well-done!

National Geography Bee Congrats to Eric W., Madison S., and Tim W., who came in third, second, and first, respectively, in Mesa View's 2012 National Geography Bee. Tim earned the top spot by correctly naming the thick layer of Earth's interior that lies between the crust and the core. (The answer is the mantle.) Tim now takes the qualifying test in hopes that he will go on to the state competition in Sacramento. Well-done, Tim!

In Mesa View's third annual staff versus students basketball game, the students held firm and defeated the staff team, 45-43, despite a last minute staff rally. With nineteen seconds remaining, the staff called a timeout and then, when they returned, tried desperately to hit a basket to even the score. Kudos to the student team and Coach Peltzer for the victory! This game puts the overall series at one staff win and two student wins. Thank you to Student Council, Mr. Peters, and Mr. Carter for putting on an exciting game.
