Life is a struggle but I am finding the energy to write thank you notes again. Just ordered some postcards a few days ago. They should be here next week! I am thankful for each and every one of you, genuinely. . . This time last year, I was in anguish after my mom (Melody) was admitted to the hospital after a serious stroke. I have not been given the time to emotionally recover from all the stress and fear as this entire year has been filled with stress and fear. It’s been over one year and she’s doing her best. I am spending a lot of time digesting, learning, while also educating friends and family. I’m tired as you all must betrying to keep up with being alive while doing the right thingprotesting, advocating for justice, undoing my own internalized racism while recognizing institutionalized racism. I have confronted my family and friends about their biases, their prejudices, their racist views and have been exasperated, watching them talk in circles to justify themselves. We nee...d to be comfortable with being uncomfortable to begin dismantling institutionalized racism. Listen, BIPOC are always uncomfortable. Every day we face microaggressions, harassment, and being othered by people we thought we could trust. So get ready, because being uncomfortable means doing your part to educate and change the views of the people in your life. You’re not alone. So many of us are doing our part, too. For example, right now, BIPOC at Conde Nast are the most uncomfortable they have ever been. They are fighting to dismantle systematic racism in their workplace where bigots upheld and preserved a broken, unfair system that took advantage of minorities, perpetuated hate, normalized the abuse of BIPOC through income disparity, capitalizing on their silence and fear. They have spoken up and have started what could be real change for their entire industry. Silence is easier. Going back to normal is easier. Confrontation is painful, hard and scary. We can’t ghost our problems, our collective societal problems, and hope everything will go away so we can go back to normal. Going back to normal means favoring the white and racist narrative. Going back to normal means not listening to BIPOC. Changing our society was never going to be easy. We, as a collective, need to recognize that white people hold institutional power. We must recognize that racism is a system of prejudice and power and not only a slur. We must recognize that racism was designed to benefit whiteness by every single economic and social measure. This hurts. This is uncomfortable. Talking about this with people you love, people you respect is going to a painful, uncomfortable journey but we are all feeling this pain together. Change starts with us. #blacklivesmatter

What is your most unnecessary necessary step? For me, it's definitely using things like peelings gels and wash offs mask. The more unnecessary they are, the more necessary they feel. I feel grounded and joyful using them :)
