BROOKLYN (shared with family’s permission) Brooklyn has XP33.1 deletion syndrome and a seizure disorder. She came to me 2.5 years ago with minimal words. She has apraxia of speech, global developmental delays, and craniofacial differences which make articulating sounds more difficult. HELLO EVERYONE Often times I get asked How did you decide to specialize in dysphagia? and I wanted to share a little bit more about me!! Specializing in dysphagia wasn’t on my radar until my clinical internship in graduate school in the NICU and Acute Rehabilitation Unit. I loved the fast paced environment and medical aspect of helping babies and adults meet their nutritional goals safely as well as parent/caregiver education.... An unknown fact SLPs are literally EXPERTS in the anatomy and physiology of swallowing. The best part of my job is seeing my clients and patients succeed and progress within therapy! Whether it’s communication or swallowing, its amazing seeing how speech/swallow therapy can be effective in helping patients meet their nutrition and communication goals. When things are difficult, Iremind myself of all of the amazing outcomes Ihave seen throughout my career.
