Here I am performing laser hair removal with 755 wavelength (Alexandrite laser) for our PA who has fair skin and brown hair. Lasers are not one size fits all- we tailor the device settings to the patient’s skin color, hair thickness and depth of hair follicle. If done improperly, one can burn the skin! Is laser hair removal safe for darker skinned patients? For darker skinned patients, we use a longer wavelength of 1064nm to decrease risk of burning and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation or hypopigmentation. Is it painful?Icing before and after helps tremendously with the risk of burning and with the pain. It feels like a rubberband snap. You can always apply topical numbing cream prior to the procedure for pain control. How many treatments are needed?Depending on the hair thickness, location, pain tolerance, hormonal influence, and skin type, it can take 6-10 treatments for 80% reduction. We use laser hair removal for other medical conditions caused by follicular issues, such as pseudofolliculitis barbae, regular folliculitis and hidradenitis suppurative.
