MEBSA Lab Spotlight The Miller Lab designs and builds unique gadgets for monitoring invertebrates. One of those gadgets is heart rate sensors for oysters and mussels. They work similarly to an Apple watch and can give real-time heart rates of animals in tidepools. This informs researchers how temperature stress affects the physiology of invertebrates.

MEBSA lab spotlight In Dr. Matt Edwards' Kelp Ecology Lab, we mainly focus on the physiology and ecology of seaweeds. Our research integrates population and community ecology with innovative experimental techniques, such as benthic chambers deployed on SCUBA, to assess spatial and temporal patterns in coastal marine communities. Currently, our lab's main project focuses on using Ulva as a bioremediation tool to remove seawater contaminants such as heavy metal...s and PCBs from San Diego Bay. Additionally, our graduate students focus on a wide range of research from bioreactors removing environment pollution to the effects of ocean acidification on fish reproduction and algal-algal interactions. Happy researching, The BEERPIGs

Due to concerns surrounding the coronavirus (COVID-19), we unfortunately have to cancel this year’s Marine Science Day. While this is an event that we greatly look forward to hosting each year, the Marine Ecology and Biology Student Association (MEBSA), along with San Diego State University, must prioritize the safety of our many guests and volunteers. We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this may cause, and while we are saddened by the cancellation of Secret Seas..., we look forward to continuing with our annual Marine Science Day in the spring of 2021. We thank you for your understanding. If you have any questions, please contact us at [email protected]. Best regards, MEBSA
