Madera, CA (January 31, 2013) In a hearing this afternoon in the Madera County Court Superior, Dr. Muhammad Anwar was awarded an additional $ 1,514,289.40 in costs of suit and prejudgment interest, on top of the $3,300,000 awarded to Dr. Anwar by a Madera County jury on November 8, 2012, against the State of California and the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation. By a 12-0 vote, the jury found that the State breached a contract with Dr. Anwar and unfair...ly interfered with his right to receive benefits in violation of their duty of good faith and fair dealing. Today’s decision brings the total judgment in Dr. Anwar’s favor to $ 4,814,289.40. That amount is now earning post-judgment interest of $923.29 per day. McCormick Barstow Client Awarded $3.3 Million Dollars Fresno, CA (November 9, 2012) A Madera County jury awarded surgeon Muhammed Anwar, M.D. $3.3 million dollars on November 8, 2012 in his suit against California’s Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation. Dr. Anwar was represented by attorney Mike Ball of Fresno’s McCormick, Barstow, Sheppard, Wayte & Carruth law firm. Beginning in 1990, Dr. Anwar provided surgical services to inmates at Central California Women’s ...Facility in Chowchilla under a State contract. When Valley State Prison for Women opened in 1995, Dr. Anwar also began providing surgical services to its inmates. Over the years, California’s prison population ballooned, and Dr. Anwar restricted his own private practice to provide surgical care to the women inmates in these large Chowchilla prisons. In the summer of 2005, CDCR abruptly terminated Dr. Anwar without notice or explanation. It took seven years to get the case in front of a jury. After deliberation, the jury concluded that the State breached its longtime contract with Dr. Anwar, violated his State Constitutional rights and awarded him monetary damages. McCormick Barstow Breaks Ground on New Office Building Fresno, CA (June 5, 2012) McCormick, Barstow, Sheppard, Wayte & Carruth LLP celebrated with a ground breaking ceremony today on the new office building to be located on the Northwest corners of El Paso and Fresno Streets. Working with Zinkin Development, the firm designed the new 70,000 square foot building. McCormick Barstow will lease the building from Zinkin Development in October 2013. In attendance for the ceremo...ny were: Lee Band, City Councilman for District 6, Nick and Dewayne Zinkin of Zinkin Development, and partners from the law firm: Lowell Carruth, Jeff Reid, Todd Baxter, and Ken Baldwin. According to Ken Baldwin, This is a momentous occasion for us. Our firm began in 1951 with only a few attorneys and now our attorneys and staff has grown to almost 200. This move will allow our staff and clients to enjoy a new facility that will accommodate the expanded staff and introduce green initiatives and advanced technology.
