Creamy pumpkin soup! Health Benefits of Pumpkin Seeds: Prostate Cancer The phytosterols can reduce the risk of prostate cancer by shrinking the prostate and stimulating the secretion of chemicals that protect against the transformation of testosterone into dihydrotestosterone (DHT). High DHT levels can cause swelling of the prostate glands.... Lower Cholesterol and Cancer Prevention Pumpkin seeds contain phytosterols, compounds that have been shown to reduce levels of LDL cholesterol and also protect against various cancers. Osteoporosis High in zinc and magnesium make pumpkin seeds bone healthy. Anti-Inflammatory Effect The Beta carotene present in pumpkin seeds and flesh has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties which can help protects against joint inflammation and arthritis. Great for skin The high amount of Vitamin A, C and E as well as Zinc present in pumpkin, make it an excellent choice for a healthy and glowing skin. Prevents Kidney Stones Have 5 to 10 grams of pumpkin seeds daily. This stimulates the kidneys and prevents the formation of calcium oxalate stones, and pumpkin seed extracts improved bladder function. Depression Pumpkin flesh contains L-tryptophan, an amino acid which in turn is converted to serotonin our feel good/ happy hormone. In China; pumpkins are used to treat parasites. It is also used to promote lactation. It is warm and sweet in property and an excellent inexpensive superfood. Ingredients: 1.5 cups chopped pumpkin cubes (medium size) steamed 1/4 th cup of pumpkin seeds 1 tb sp of hemp seeds 1/2 tsp black peppers whole. 1 tsp of grated ginger. 1 table spoon of Chinese barley. 1 tsp of cumin and coriander. 3-4 cups of hot/ warm water. Cilantro to garnish. Salt as per taste. 2 table spoon of lime juice. Instructions: 1. Steam the chopped pumpkins until well cooked. 2. Add all the above ingredients in blendtec, baked pumpkin and 3-4 cups of hot water. 3. Press soup button and soup is ready in 2 mins. You can use other blenders which can take hot water to make soup or make a puree and boil on stove. 4. Add lime juice after soup is ready and stir. The creamy soup is ready for you! Serve warm. Garnish with cilantro or any edible flower! Just addition of pumpkin seed and hemp seed make it taste so creamy and less sweet. I like spicy warm soups in winters. Valentines week special: Heart healthy Beet-hawthorn berries-hemp- walnut soup Ingredients: 1. Beet: steamed, peeled chopped 1.5 cups. 2. Walnuts 10-15.... 3. hemp 1 tablespoon 4. 1 tsp cumin. 5.1 tea spoon grated ginger. 6. 3-5 black pepper. 7. Salt as per taste. 8. 2 tb Sp lemon juice or mango powder. 9. 4 cups of water (hot) 10. Hawthorn berries 10-12 dry pieces. 11. Yi Yi ren powder 1 table spoon. Instructions: 1. Steam the beets with skin, cool down, peel and chop. 2. Add all the ingredients to the blend tec. 3. Press soup button. Soup is ready. Garnish with hemp seeds. If you don’t have blend tec you can make a puree and cook on stove for 10 -20 mins. Heart Healthy Benefits of Beets are discussed in many of my previous posts. Hawthorn berries is another super food which is excellent source of antioxidants and anti inflammatory compounds which help lower blood pressure, cholesterol, triglycerides, and used to treat post heart failure. They are good digestive aid and also lowers anxiety. Only thing is they can be very drying and can dry stools if already have tendency to constipation. Hence I have combined it with omega rich foods which are moistening/ lubricating to large intestines such as walnuts and hemp seeds. Plus they are also excellent for heart health and balance the soup recipe. Valentines treat to calm your heart with Lotus seed muffins (no bake). Ingredients: cup Ghee or almond oil cup lotus seed flour (Lian zi flour) 1/4 th cup ti Yi Yi ren ( jobs tear) flour 1/4 th cup almond butter1 cup Hot water or hot milk1/4 th cup coconut Sugar1 tsp Cardamom Powder... Sliced almonds to garnish Instructions * Heat ghee in a pan. * Add lotus seed flour and Job’s tears flour and fry on medium low heat until it turns brown. * Keep stirring continuously. * Add hot water or milk and cook all the milk is soaked by the flour.keep stirring until a cooked dough ball is ready. * Add sugar and cook until it turns dark brown in colour. * Add cardamom powder and mix well. * Garnish with almond. * After it has cooled down then put it in mold press, and shake it off to get the muffin shape. Serve at room temperature. Health benefits: Lotus seeds help prevent cancer, boost immunity and relieve depression, insomnia stress and anxiety. In traditional Chinese medicine, lotus seeds are considered sweet and neutral, and are associated with the Spleen, Kidney and Heart meridians. It is cooling and calms the heart. They are taken to tonify the spleen, reinforce the kidneys and nourish the blood. Lotus seeds have astringent properties, and are consumed to help relieve the symptoms of diarrhea and improve appetite. Dancers and Shoulder Pain For dancers, our shoulders are essential to practice our passion. From the shoulders, we are able to move through our entire upper body. But, as such, we also experience pain and injury in this area. The shoulder is made of three bones: the scapula (shoulder blade), the clavicle (collar bone), and the humerus (upper arm bone). These, along with tendons and cartilage for the rotator cuff - a strong and mobile part of the body, but one that is also vul...nerable to injury. Here are the most common shoulder injuries for dancers: Shoulder Dislocation Shoulder Impingement Rotator Cuff Tear Acromioclavicular Joint Sprain Dancers often develop shoulder issues like rotator cuff tendinitis from frequently raising their arms for spinning. Raising the arm causes the rotator cuff to fall into a position where it wears over time under the acromion. This causes chronic wear and tear that eventually strains the tendons and makes them weak and prone to injury. Falling is another common cause of shoulder dislocation and can cause pain and unsteadiness in the shoulder, as well as muscle spasms and repeated injuries. The neck rules our movement, especially as dancers. Where the neck goes, the body goes! Healthy neck movement is required for flexion, extension, rotation, side bending, diagonal, and spiral. That’s what dancing is all about. Dancer’s biggest issues with neck pain come from strain and overuse. The biggest culprit in dancers is the sternocleidomastoid (SCM) and the obliques. Rotation is a major issue when it comes to dance injuries and the SCM is a key rotator. More problems f...or dancers occur when the obliques are dysfunctional and inhibited. When this happens, you will rotate more with your neck and less with your torso, leading to neck strain. It is for this reason that we never treat just the neck! We have to look at the whole picture - all the way down to the feet - when we treat neck pain.
