! Did you know that fig leaves make a delicious tea with a lot of health benefits? You can make fig leaf tea from fresh or dried leaves. If you’re using fresh leaves, be sure to avoid touching the latex that exudes from the petiole (the leaf stem) because it can be irritating to some people.... Reported health benefits include early research that indicates it may reduce the amount of insulin needed by type 1 diabetics. It also seems to lower blood sugar levels after eating. Drinking 3-4 cups a day is also believed to help with bronchitis and asthma. To brew a cup of fig leaf tea, whether using dried or fresh leaves, pour boiling water over the finely chopped or crushed leaves and let the leaves infuse for 20-30 minutes. The tea has a lovely figgy flavor and no bitterness. You can add sweetener if you want but it’s really not necessary! As always, be cautious and start with a small amount. Be aware that if you are sensitive to mulberry, natural rubber latex, or weeping fig you might have an allergic reaction to fig leaf tea.
