One of the core values that we practice at Marin JCC Camp is Tikkun Olam, which we translate at camp to "repairing the world." We practice Tikkun Olam at camp in many ways by teaching our campers the importance of the larger impact each of them has on the world. Some days we focus on smaller acts of kindness such as planting flowers, sorting and learning about garbage and recycling and creating art out of upcycled materials. On other days, we plan for larger acts of kindnes...s such as volunteering to host a beach clean-up day. The lessons that we take away are that each actno matter how big or how smallimpacts the world as a whole and is meaningful. This week we want to share an upcoming opportunity for you and your families to practice Tikkun Olam at home! Please see the link here: https://mailchi.mp/cvnl/enews62518-909877?e=350c591a18 to see different ways that you and your family can volunteer and support our community at large during Family Volunteer Day!

MONTHLY MEMBER SPOTLIGHT Meet Susan, Alistair, and Aidan Cumming How does it feel coming back to the JCC after shelter in place?... It feels great! It gets us out of the house every morning. It’s been nice to see once again the familiar faces of JCC staff and some of our morning workout crew from the pre-pandemic era. Being able to come to the JCC has restored a little bit of normalcy into an otherwise very abnormal time. We like that we go together and motivate one another. What do you like best about the new setup? It feels safe. The JCC is doing this right and should be a model for others. We love spinning and lifting weights outside. Maybe we can keep the outside gym, even when the inside one reopens. And the pool setup is amazing. It’s so nice to swim in our own lane! Pretty sure that isn’t going to last, but one can dream!

Two Mockumentaries & a Joyous Musical Best in Show 2000. Available on Prime-Video Amazon.com and trailers on YouTube.... Be a guest at the highly competitive, tension filled Mayflower Dog Show. The scent of competition is in the air as we meet adorable canine contestants and their colorful owners. Director and costar Christopher Guest developed a group of mockumentaries, films of little rehearsal time, thin script, and ensemble improvised scenes. Guest told me the phrase mockumentary is not his favorite since he says his movies do not mock, but explore characters and situations. Eugene Levy, Catherine O’Hara, and the rest of his marvelous troopers keep this a fresh and funny look at the need to win, outrageous characters, and darling dogs that just somehow put up with it. Waiting for Guffman 1996. Available on Prime-Video Amazon.com and trailers on YouTube. Due to my own show business background, this Christopher Guest mockumentary gets to my funny bone every time. It’s the small town of Blaine, Mo. The town’s movers and shakers are about to celebrate their 150th anniversary by putting on a show: Red, White, and Blaine. Cowriter Eugene Levy, Catherine O’Hara, Parker Posey, and Fred Willard are part of the ensemble, but it is Guest himself who stars as Corky St. Clair, an eccentric and frustrated Broadway import to Blaine. Fred Willard was the first person cast by Guest and he told me he was thrilled not to have to learn lines. Then he realized he would have to personally develop the character of the town travel agent, who of course has never traveled. Everyone succeeds in this affectionate exploration of home town theatrics. Hairspray 2007. Available on YouTube and Amazon Prime. Put on comfy clothes and get ready to stand up and shake it a little! It’s 1960’s Baltimore. Dance loving teen Tracy Turnblad auditions for the big TV dance party and win, becoming a celebrity, influencer, and sensation. But what she wants more than fame is a chance to integrate the show itself. Based on John Waters 1988 comedy, this offbeat, wonderfully musical movie will have you dancing in the aisles. Just the opening number, Good Morning Baltimore, may do it for you. John Travolta plays this in drag as a shy mother ready to bust out of her norm. Christopher Walken, Michelle Pfeiffer, Queen Latifah, and newcomer Nicole Blonsky add to the charm, fun, and showstopping musical numbers. One of our best recent musical comedies.

Memorable Moments Memorial Day Weekend conjures up thoughts of road trips, good music, and time enough to curl up with a good book. Let me share some of what I thought about on this special weekend. Listen to James and Sir Paul... Hitting the road with family and friends Like Late Night talk show host James Corden and Paul McCartney taking a carpool karaoke musical Beatles tour of Liverpool. https://youtu.be/QjvzCTqkBDQ Enjoy Adele! Enjoying music that relaxes and transports Let’s listen to this amazing NPR Tiny Desk concert with Adele. She has an incredible voice, and the bare bones productions of these concerts are the perfect showcase for her true talent. I love this concert because it is up close and personal. Viewing it again during my shelter in place, I took the time to scroll through the new comments, which can be entertaining and add a new, comical perspective. https://youtu.be/XfzpYcwiUrA

The holiday of Shavuot (beginning next Thursday, May 28 at sundown) honors the moment where we received the Torah on Mt. Sinai. It’s a custom to eat dairy or plant-based faux dairy so that we associate creamy sweetness with the gifts of Torah. In honor of this custom, we’re collecting dairy recipes to give our community some sweet inspiration. We want to know: what is your favorite dairy recipe? (Alternative milks are fine too!)

New Beginnings This time of year has always been a time for new beginnings, and for the JCC it has always meant gearing up for Summer Nights and Grad Nights. Well, this year is different: no Summer Nights and no grad night celebrations taking over every inch of our center. However, it still remains a time to reflect on the wonderful friends, experiences, and lessons we’ve gained along the way. As the lockdown continues, and we are all faced with the uncertainties ahead of us,... it is still the time for every one of us to celebrate our accomplishments. Although we at the Center are not decorating and prepping for our community graduations and high school grad nights we still want to send our best wishes. We are wishing all the graduatesfrom pre-school to college, from dance school to acting classes, and all other graduatesa happy graduation, wondrous adventures, and best of health. OUR HATS ARE OFF TO ALL OF YOU! Hang in there. We are making history together. Watch John Krasinski and Some Good News, the graduation edition: https://youtu.be/IweS2CPSnbI

Hope you are all faring well, (virtually) diving into the arts, finding laughter in unexpected places, and embracing the beautiful nature that surrounds us right here in Marin. Here are three pieces from incredibly talented people offering a little levity to our current situation. Enjoy, stay healthy, and hope to see you soon. Ladies Who Lunch... In case you missed this, it’s really worth watching Meryl Streep, Christine Baranski, and Audra McDonald. It's from TAKE ME TO THE WORLD: A SONDHEIM 90TH BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION, a tribute to Broadway songwriting icon Stephen Sondheim created during the epidemic as a benefit for ASTEP (Artists Striving to End Poverty). Watch the ladies: https://youtu.be/-mBA9tNdolg Good News And if you need to step away from the standard news, a new fave is Some Good News (SGN) with John Krasinski. Enjoy Good News: https://youtu.be/o1zIgTwENPg Hello... And with all the COVID covers out therewell, this one actually made me laugh! Hello from the Inside: https://youtu.be/M5azNpTwVk8

I look forward to bringing you terrific films, documentaries, series, and musicals as we discover and re-discover the joys of escape and enlightenment! Jan Feel-Good Films at Home by Jan Wahl Movies have the power to take us out of ourselves. Great writing, smooth acting, insightful direction, gorgeous cinematographythey all work together and add up to more than the many cinematic elements. In these challenging times, let’s celebrate cinema with three of my favorite movies... to lift our spirits and reawaken our smiles. THE PEANUT BUTTER FALCON 2019 (available on Amazon Prime, Fandango) After running away from his assisted living facility, a young man with Down syndrome pursues his dream of becoming a professional wrestler. Now how could this be uplifting? Easily when you have a charismatic Zack Gottsagen as the lead, meeting up with rebellious outlaw Shia LaBeouf. This comedy drama gives us the Huck Finn story with bold wit and loving details. There’s an edginess mixed with sweetness as Thomas Haden Church, Bruce Dern, and Dakota Johnson ride along in this exuberant and eccentric film. A satisfying ending to a journey worth taking. MY FAVORITE YEAR 1982 (available on YouTube, iTunes) It’s the 1950’s at Rockefeller Center and Sid Caesar is the king of national television. A young comic and writer works for the show and is thrilled when his idol, a swashbuckling movie star, is booked for an appearance. Based on a true incident when Mel Brooks experienced Errol Flynn, everyone learns that even the most famous among us sometimes do not live up to their silver screen image. Peter O’Toole was nominated for Best Actor Oscar (lost to Gandhi’s Ben Kingsley) and is unforgettable as Alan Swann. Costarring Lainie Kazan, Lou Jacobi, Mark Linn-Baker, Bill Macy, and a brilliant Joe Bologna, this is my second favorite comedy ever, right behind Some Like it Hot! IN AND OUT 1997 (available on Amazon) Upon winning an Oscar, a thrilled actor honors his high school teacher by mentioning he is gay. This is new information to his friends and family in the small Indiana town where he is a popular teacher and coach. Kevin Kline reminds us he is one of our great actors as the befuddled yet angry man who has to prove to the world that he is not what is said about him. The media frenzy (with Tom Selleck perfectly cast as Entertainment Tonight’s correspondent) is perfect satire, as is the witty dialogue by Paul Rudnick. Joan Cusack was nominated as the teacher’s confused fiancée, nominated for Best Supporting Actress Oscar, but lost to L.A. Confidential’s Kim Basinger. This comedy is a joy from beginning to end.
