Wow, what a way to wake up this morning! I’ve had so much new love on my page today because of the fantastic opportunity I had to be one of 5 boss babes (seriously, I was in awe to be in their company) featured on @theThrivingStylist podcast with my business coach (and sister friend!) @BrittSeva. I couldn’t be more thankful for how far I’ve come in the last few years thanks to everything I’ve learned and what that’s allowing me to accomplish as I move forward. So, real talk, some things have changed since I recorded that episode, and it was really eye opening to listen to it again today. At the time, I had just been asked to work at, what I felt to be, the absolute perfect salon for me. I was on a freakin’ high. And then they changed their mind. Y’all, I was devastated. Crushed. And threw the best pity party for about 3 days. And I was dreading this podcast because I felt like such a fraud and like I didn’t deserve to be there because I wasn’t where I *should* be. But I realized today listening to myself how much better off I am now because I let myself feel all the upset fully, instead of just trying to push it under the rug and pretend everything was okay. I listened to myself today and was proud of the woman speaking. And I’m more ready than ever to fly back to Nashville tomorrow and hit the ground running to find the perfect salon family for me. And that’s it. What else is there to do when things don’t go your way, besides pulling yourself up by your bootstraps and keep on chasing your dreams? This pretty lady literally waited YEARS for this transformation. I'm not kidding. Almost 5 years ago she popped in for a haircut with a GORGEOUS long, thick, dark luscious mane that people would kill for, and she was talking then about maybe wanting to try some highlights sometime "soon". Well, soon turned into half a decade but better late than never! We finally did it and I swear it looks like this was meant to be on her. Look at the way her eyes just pop!... Now, I don't do big transformations often, I've become more of the maintain-your-mane kind of hairstylist, but MAN was that fun and I wanna do it again! So who's next?! Haha! When I asked @rybradleymusic if he wanted to do a first look or see me walking down the aisle, he said: "Is it old fashioned of me to say that I want to see you walking down the aisle?" I mean, I don't know if it's old-fashioned or not, but I was all about it. When I was first dreaming of my "big day" -- at like 4 years old obviously -- first looks weren't even a thing, so I was kind of excited that he wanted it to be more "traditional."... HOWEVER.. He did marry a hairstylist and I, OF COURSE, had to make sure his hair was on point for the ceremony so...we masked his eyeballs and I styled him up. My heart is heavy with everything going on today in Huntington Beach, Nashville last night and so many other places throughout this weekend. I'll be praying for peaceful protests, the safety of those speaking out for a change and those tasked with protection, and mostly I'll be praying for a change. Something has got to change. In times like this, I have to focus on what I can do and can control. It's the only way to make it through my day. So today, I'm celebrating... a teeny bit knowing that even though the salon may need to be boarded up today, a week from tomorrow, we'll get to throw those doors open and welcome back our lovely clients and salon family. Some procedures and policies will of course need to change and all of that information is in the email I sent out a couple days ago. (If you haven't been getting my emails, DM me your address and I'll make sure you get them!) If you've filled out the form to get on my waiting list (also in the emails, so let me know if you need that!), I'm planning appointments today based on those forms and the order in which your services were interrupted by the 'Rona, and will start sending out emails with the spot I have saved for you tomorrow, so keep an eye out! Throughout the emotional rollercoaster of the past couple months and the heartbreak of people all over the country this past week, the light that's shone brightest for me at the end of the tunnel has been the time I get to spend with you and getting to make my little world a better place, even just a little bit for a short time, because you're in it. It’s time to freakin’ celebrate! Nope, my salon isn’t open yet! Sorry if I made you think it was. What a awful, horrible, mean prank. However, there is something to celebrate and it is that my kitchen got a super cute face lift. I know, not as big of a deal to you as the salon opening but to me, this is huge!... I really disliked our upper cabinets in our kitchen. They made the kitchen look smaller and were sorta bulky looking over my shoulder, judging me while I attempt to make sourdough bagels and figure out how to use an electric stovetop. So, we pulled the doors off, deep cleaned that gross, old inside and painted it a gorgeous navy blue, then filled it with our new, beautiful dinnerware gifted by my aunt. A small step for the kitchen, but a giant leap for the new Susie Homemaker I’m turning into. Now, time for wine and relaxation. (P.S. can you tell that I ALSO need my hair done? It looks like I'm in the salon... I'm not, obviously. But I wish I was! I'm actually in Nashville, Tennessee, filling my time with decorating, organizing and overall turning our house into a home.... Don't worry though, I'm only a 5 hour flight away and the second I know we can open, I'll be headed home to California to take care of all the manes I've been missing for too long. In the meantime, I'm building/organizing a pantry, hanging pictures, building Ikea furniture and deep cleaning our garage to turn it into a workshop for the DIY crafts I like to do. This is my first home where I had any real say in how it was organized, decorated and loved. I want to highlight an extra special Mom in my life. This is my "baby" sister, and while there are a lot of ways I look up to her, more than anything I hope I learn how to "mom" like her when it's my turn. I hope I can have the patience she has. You should see the way she wrangles her two rambunctious boys. No matter what they're doing, instead of just saying "no" or "stop," I see her take the time to explain the boundaries and why they are there. I have no idea ho...w she does it. I hope I learn to stop and enjoy the sweet moments like she does. We were sitting at my dad's house and her oldest was snuggled up in her lap and even with everything else going on right then in our big, loud family, she blocked it all out and her entire attention was on savoring that moment. I hope I find the balance she has. Working full time, raising two boys, a dog and chickens, being a loving wife and best friend to her husband, a great cook, keeping a clean and inviting home, and infinitely more. And I've yet to hear her ever be really overwhelmed. Maybe a rough day, for sure, she's only human after all, but somehow the next day she's up, smiling her beautiful smile, ready to tackle the next day. I hope I make my children feel as safe and loved as she does. She has this way of making you feel important and validated, no matter what else is going on. She was the first to make me an aunty, and she'll be the first one I call when I’m a mom and don't know what the heck I'm doing. I love you, sissy, and I hope you have the best day being celebrated for the incredible mom, wife, sister, daughter, and friend that you are. You sure deserve it. See more
