It’s Earth Day: the perfect day to celebrate what’s beneath our soilour primary water supply, groundwater. About 100 yards underground the San Gabriel Valley where we live, work and play, our water is held naturally by the earth. That’s why for all of us, Earth Day is about our water 365 days a year. All of us have a role to take care of these waters, especially now, as our winter season gave us well below average rain and snow. Right now, our groundwater levels are 20% lower than before the last drought began. So celebrate Earth Day today and take care of our water every day. Our water: our common ground and common cause. #WatersConnectUs #EarthDay2021

"This time last year, we were learning how to live life apart from one another to take care of ourselves and each other. That’s when we shared with you our water keeps us connected. Our groundwater, which 1.5 million of us depend on every day here in the San Gabriel Valley, connects us even when we are apart. "Springtime is the perfect time to report on our groundwater levels as our rainy season ends. Right now, groundwater levels are about 20% lower than they were in spring 2006 at this same time, before the last two droughts began. That means these last droughts never ended for our groundwater...the water supply that 1.5 million of us in the San Gabriel Valley depend on for use in our day-to-day lives. Start a new season with a new commitment: help our groundwater recover from the last drought before the next one begins. Our water: it’s our common ground and common cause. #WatersConnectUs"

Even with this week’s rain and snow, the drought isn't over for our groundwater, with levels lower than when the last drought began. It's our groundwater that provides most of the water 1.5 million of us in the San Gabriel Valley use in our day-to-day lives. We all have a role in helping our groundwater recover before the next drought begins. Our water: it’s our common ground and common cause. Where’s your water? Before it gets to your shower, hose or tap, it’s held in reservoirs like the Morris Reservoir and Dam, in the beautiful San Gabriel Mountains in the Angeles National Forest. This reservoir and others like it hold rain and snowmelt to feed into our groundwater, which is located right below the communities we call home. Our water is our common ground and common cause. #WatersThatConnectUs

Where’s your water? Well, some of it starts as rain and snowmelt, then it’s held in places like this a pond we made called the San Gabriel Canyon Spreading Grounds to help it seep underground to become the water we all rely on. The way we care for water is a reflection of us: it’s our common ground and common cause. #WatersThatConnectUs
