The returns for State Proposition 4, Granting Suffrage to Women, shows that it was beaten by seventeen votes. In San Mateo County it lost by nearly 300 votes. It was even a very close vote in the state, ta...king 3 days to tally, before it was called a winner. CA Prop 4 10/10/1911 Yes: 125,037 No: 121,450 San Mateo County Yes: 1188 No: 1487 South San Francisco Yes: 72 No: 89 August 18, 1920 - The 19th Amendment of the U. S. Constitution was ratified.
