Today, we join the nation in honoring the life and tireless work of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. In these challenging and unprecedented times, let us be inspired by his legacy and stand together in peace, unity, and hope for the future.
Parolee Arrested Following Hours Long Stand-off On 01/16/21 around 3:30pm, the Madera County Sheriff’s Communications Center received a call reporting a possible in-progress commercial burglary in the 30000 block of Avenue 12. MCSO Deputies as well as California Highway Patrol Officers responded to the scene and observed a subject holding a knife climb onto the roof. The subject refused to come down from the roof and cooperate with the deputies. The Madera County Sheriff’s C...risis Negotiation Team established communication with the subject and worked over the next several hours to talk him down. Madera City Fire provided ladder truck 58 to assist with negotiations and the surrender. The subject, identified as John Holliday, has an active warrant out of Kern County, and is on parole out of Fresno County for Assault with a Deadly Weapon on a Peace Officer. After over three hours of communication, Holliday came down from the roof, and subsequently charged deputies with his knife. Team members were able to maintain a safe distance and administer less lethal deployments, including Taser, to take Holliday safely into custody. After being evaluated by EMS, he was transported to an area hospital for medical clearance prior to booking at the Madera County Department of Corrections. Holliday, a 36 year old Fresno resident, will be booked on charges of felony assault with a deadly weapon on a peace officer, misdemeanor charges of vandalism and trespassing, as well as violation of parole and his out of county warrant. Sheriff Tyson Pogue states, We are grateful for the positive resolution of this critical incident. I am proud of our deputies for their level headed decision making. This incident could have had a very different outcome, and this is a fine example of the caliber of individuals we have on our team. This investigation remains ongoing. If anyone has information relating to this incident, please contact our office at (559) 675-7770.
