March 12, 2021 IRS Statement - American Rescue Plan Act of 2021 The IRS is reviewing implementation plans for the newly enacted American Rescue Plan Act of 2021. Additional information about a new round of Economic Impact Payments, the expanded Child Tax Credit, including advance payments of the Child Tax Credit, and other tax provisions will be made available as soon as possible on IRS.gov. The IRS strongly urges taxpayers to not file amended returns related to the new legis...lative provisions or take other unnecessary steps at this time. The IRS will provide taxpayers with additional guidance on those provisions that could affect their 2020 tax return, including the retroactive provision that makes the first $10,200 of 2020 unemployment benefits nontaxable. For those who haven't filed yet, the IRS will provide a worksheet for paper filers and work with software industry to update current tax software so that taxpayers can determine how to report their unemployment income on their 2020 tax return. For those who received unemployment benefits last year and have already filed their 2020 tax return, the IRS emphasizes they should not file an amended return at this time, until the IRS issues additional guidance. NOTE: Our software has been updated and we are now filing tax returns with unemployment, but we are still waiting on the update for those who had insurance on the marketplace and received a 1095A or 3895

Pending Legislation The president is expected to sign a bill this week which will provide relief for the continued impact of COVID-19. The American Rescue Plan Act of 2021 extends unemployment benefits, provides funding for state and local governments, supports vaccine rollouts, expands the child tax credit, makes a portion of unemployment compensation nontaxable for certain filers, and gives many Americans an additional Economic Impact Payment. There are a couple of items in... the bill that will affect 2020 tax returns, including the tax waiver for unemployment compensation up to $10,200 for many taxpayers and elimination of repayment of the Advance Premium Tax Credit. We realize you may have a lot of questions regarding the execution of the provisions and we want to assure you that both of us are actively following the IRS updates, taking the appropriate courses, reading the documentation and will have the updated software as soon as it is released. Please note that many people may or will need to amend their taxes, depending on the implementation by the IRS. You also may be required to resign your taxes with the adjustments. For those of you impacted by the changes, it will more likely than not, be a favorable adjustment and we look forward to working with you as always. For those of you who have received Unemployment in 2020 or if you were on the Health Insurance Marketplace and received a 1095-A / 3895, we will be holding off on processing your tax returns, but you may make an appointment or bring in your documents so that we may enter all of your information and submit once the new tax laws and software updates go into effect.
