Enter the Exige. In typical Lotus fashion it had introduced a very special genre of car in the Noughties a usable track car that would outperform almost anything else on drivers' roads.

Bursting onto the scene in the Nineties, the Lotus Elise Series 1 weighed 725kg and stayed true to founder Chapman's obsession with light weight. "Simplify, the...n add lightness", the Elise was a revolution. Its composite and energy absorbing chassis was made from epoxy-bonded aluminium extrusions, a world first, as were its extruded aluminium suspension uprights and aluminium metal-matrix brake discs. A lesson in Seventies geometry, the Lotus Esprit was designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro using a Lotus glassfibre body over a Colin Chapman-developed backbone chassis. Made at Lotus' Hethel HQ, the Esprit's production ran to 2004.

The Sixties saw a Formula 1 car that changed the game forever. The Lotus 49, powered by the famous Cosworth DFV engine in its iconic configuration and driven by... The Lotus Mark I is born, marking the beginning of the Lotus story. Designed by founder Colin Chapman in 1948, the Lotus Mark I was based on an Austin Seven and designed to be a trials car.

Leaving a 70-themed ma...rk on the test track’s skidpan using just two of its most celebrated models, no CGI and more than few pairs of tyres were used in this video.
