Bursting onto the scene in the Nineties, the Lotus Elise Series 1 weighed 725kg and stayed true to founder Chapman's obsession with light weight. "Simplify, the...n add lightness", the Elise was a revolution. Its composite and energy absorbing chassis was made from epoxy-bonded aluminium extrusions, a world first, as were its extruded aluminium suspension uprights and aluminium metal-matrix brake discs. A lesson in Seventies geometry, the Lotus Esprit was designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro using a Lotus glassfibre body over a Colin Chapman-developed backbone chassis. Made at Lotus' Hethel HQ, the Esprit's production ran to 2004.
