The California Association of Local Conservation Corps recognizes this historic moment in our nation’s history. We especially celebrate our nation’s first woman and person of African & Indian descent as our Vice President. We look forward to working with the new administration to address climate change and racial equity while we continue to work hard to create a society where all young people have the opportunity to live their dreams! #inauguration #InaugurationDay2021... #inauguration2021 See more
Today we honor #MLKDay2021 & Dr King's inspiration that lives on in the service we offer & the many ways we take action to create an equitable world. We have a long way to go but we will persevere in our commitment to building & sustaining a beloved community for POC and for all.
2020 - what a year! Through it all, day after day, CA's local corps have shown up to take care of their corpsmembers and communities. "Civicorps changed my life," says Lily, a graduate of Civicorps Academy who has gone on to become one of few women accepted into Waste Management’s union apprenticeship. Read Lily's story, and much more, in Civicorps annual report: https://cvcorps.org/donate/annual-report-2020/
Corps Conversations is a series of youth-led conversations moderated by young people who are members of CA's local corps. Informed by the issues that matter to young people today, this is a space for youth to share their stories and experiences while interviewing their peers, elected officials, and other stakeholders. In this first conversation, a team of corpsmembers from San Jose and San Diego interview CA State Senator Ben Hueso about the Covid-19 pandemic, racial justice, and pathways to success for young people like themselves.
The Covid pandemic has not stopped, and neither have CA's local corps, who continue to show up for their communities across the state. When the pandemic hit our community, the number of people we served doubled in just a matter of weeks. At the same time, we lost a large portion of our volunteer workforce due to stay at home orders "We were in the very challenging position of handing out twice the amount of food, but with a fraction of our volunteers, said Leslie Bacho, CE...O of Second Harvest of Silicon Valley The members of the Mysjcccs San Jose Conservation Corps stepped in at a critical time to fill that void and have helped ensure that nutritious food gets to the people who need it most. It’s really inspiring to see these amazing young people get involved in their community and make a real difference in the lives of so many people. 75% of likely voters in both parties agree: investing in Conservation Corps - getting young people trained and paid to take care of our environment - is a good idea. Several members of Congress have bills in progress- learn more at https://www.cpr.org//amid-a-pandemic-economy-and-record-w/ #LocalCorpsStrength
To honor #IndigenousPeoplesDay we share this deeply meaningful and timely missive: https://theguardian.com//western-worldyour-civilisation-ki May we honor this planet and all who dwell here - through environmental actions; through the ways we teach history; through simple acts of respect. We are #InThisTogether
When @FresnoCountyCA needed help distributing drinking water to residents who'd evacuated due to the Creek Fire, they knew just who to call: Fresno EOC Local Conservation Corps. See the team in action at https://bit.ly/36zkjy9 "The main thing for them right now is water conditions," says Joshua Soleno, Public Land Specialist at the Fresno EOC local conservation corps. "Right now it's unsafe for them to have drinking water so we're out here providing cases of free water to th...e citizens as they reintegrate back into the areas they were forced to evacuate from." Local corps are here to get the job done! @SenatorBorgeas @AMCab2 @Senator_Hurtado #CreekFire #localcorpsstrength
On September 30, Governor Newsom signed historic legislation to reform CA's juvenile justice system. Some of the impacts of this legislation include: - Providing youth with rehabilitative services closer to home as opposed to incarceration - Ending the practice of referring youth who are having problems at school to probation programs... CA’s local corps believe that all young people, regardless of their background, deserve opportunities to thrive and contribute positively to their communities. We thank @CAgovernor, @AsmMikeGipson, Senator Steven Bradford, @SenMariaEDurazo and @AsmKamlagerDove for taking concrete steps to disrupt the school to prison pipeline & ensuring that justice-involved youth receive age-appropriate treatment. Collaboration is core to the local corps' impact. Recently a team from @LACorps traveled to San Jose to package food for firefighters in partnership with @mysjcccs and @2ndHarvest. I really enjoyed the trip to San Jose," says Ashlie, a corpsmember from LA. "We worked hard to try and make a difference. Locally, the corps are here for their communities. As a network, we are here for the state. ... #Frontlines #InThisTogether #LocalCorpsStrength
