Pretty cool seeing NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration’s Perseverance rover touch down on Mars yesterday. Even cooler: three LMU Seaver College alumni played a part on this historic mission! Kevin Recker ’82, engineering department manager at General Dynamics, shares: "For this program, my role was the engineering manager for the team that designed and built the SDST and X Band SSPA. General Dynamics has a long history with NASA and Jet Propulsion Laboratory ...(JPL) as we build the SDST The Small Deep Space Transponder this is one of the radio interfaces between NASA Ground Control and the spacecraft. We also build the X-Band Solid State Power Amplifier. This device amplifies the signals in the X-Band Frequency to reach other NASA receivers. The spacecraft is based on the successful Mars Science Lab Mission which delivered the Rover Curiosity to Mars in 2012 for which we also built the communication links. There are a couple of JPL Engineers on the mission also from LMU. We have a good contingent of very sharp engineers from LMU at General Dynamics. Sean Flynn '94 is Director of New Business for this area. Also Jim Russell '91 is a Systems Engineer and Deputy Program Manager for Engineering. Go Lions! : NASA/JPL-Caltech
