Loma Linda University Internal Medicine Residency Program 31.10.2020

Meet Dr. Preeya Goyal, Gastroenterology Fellow PGY-5! Here’s what she had to say about fellowship! Fellowship can be challenging as you strive to become an expert in the field and have multiple obligations (boards etc) but it's important to remember to enjoy the journey and take some time for yourself as well! #GI #Gastroenterology #LomaLindaGI #LLUGI #Fellowship #LomaLinda #Fellows #lluimresidency 1. What made you choose Gi? I got interested in GI as a medical student a...t Northwestern University. I loved the content and procedural aspect of GI as well as the people in the specialty! Very happy with my decision and would love to talk to anyone interested in the speciality! 2. What was the hardest thing for you transitioning from a resident to a fellow? The hardest thing was the learning curve. It's important to remember that it's okay to not know everything the first day of fellowship. Shout out to Dr. Zhao and Dr. Azab for patiently teaching me how to scope for the very first time on the first day of fellowship! 3. Can you describe your process of applying into GI? I knew pretty early on that I wanted to do GI! So after I took Step 3, I started research about halfway through intern year. You apply at the end of second year/beginning of third year so it is important to start earlier rather than later. I rotated through GI once during intern year and again during second year, at which point I asked for my LORs (this was May of my second year). 4. What should you look for in a fellowship program? For me, good experience/training, location, and a supportive environment were my fellowship priorities. I knew Loma Linda would give me the experience I needed to be a well-trained gastroenterologist and my attendings/cofellows would be supportive on this journey. The location was ideal as my family is all within an hour drive! 5. How is Loma Linda preparing you for a future as a GI specialist? I have had no issues with getting enough cases (both EGDs and colonoscopies) during my fellowship! I have seen a variety of cases ranging from screening colonoscopies to food impactions to bleeders to more advanced/specialized cases. 6. What advice do you have for residents trying to become a GI specialist? Rotate through GI early and talk to any of us! We would love to help you decide if GI is for you! 7. What excites you the most about the future of GI? The endless possibilities of what we can do endoscopically now!

And the next #SuperIntern award goes to...Dr. Jin Bae! Here’s what Dr. Kunal Patel and a cardiology fellow had to say about Dr. Bae: Dr Jin Bae(JB) spent 3 solid hours getting records from an outside facility for EGD records, a patient who was transferred her without any records at all. Difficult as it was, he prevailed: he did not take no for an answer and prevented a patient from leaving AMA. Talk about commitment to patient care! Awesome job, Dr. Bae! We want you to be o...ur doctor! The #SuperIntern award is given to any intern who does an amazing job and goes above and beyond the call of duty. Anyone can nominate anyone to be recognized for this award! If you know of someone who should be recognized, please let us know! #SuperIntern #InternAward #Recognition #Seen #Acknowledged #Heard #Respect #lluimresidency

Meet Dr. Adeba Mohammad, a PGY-2 who’s interested in cardiology! Here’s what she had to say about her interest in this field: Why cardiology? It is a fascinating, rapidly evolving field that combines critical care with procedural technical skills and has multiple subspecialty and research options. My experience during my CCU/cardiology rotations have been great! The cardiology attendings were always accessible and I always felt comfortable in reaching out for help when I ne...eded it. I expanded my medical knowledge and clinical experience through direct patient care and research. Caring for critically ill patients with advanced heart failure, life threatening cardiac arrhythmias, and myocardial infarctions has been a truly humbling experience. On CCU, I had the opportunity to respond to CODE BLUES to manage patients with cardiac arrest, with some resuscitation efforts being successful and others not. Witnessing the rapid change of clinical status of patients from being relatively stable to cardiac arrest highlights the critical nature of heart disease. I look forward to continuing to expand my medical knowledge through clinical experience and research. All the best in your journey, Dr. Mohammad! #Cardiology #CardiologyFellowship #Fellowship #LLUCardiology #LLCardiology #LLUCards #lluimresidency

Meet Dr. Mohammad Qureashi, a PGY-3 who is currently applying to cardiology! This is what he had to say about why he’s going into this field: My experiences during my residency really pushed me towards cardiology. I remember vividly during CCU rotation - a patient experienced a cardiac arrest due to ventricular tachycardia at home. EMT was able to achieve ROSC on the field and patient was brought to the hospital. Initial labs were drawn and patient went in for emergent cardi...ac catherization. During the procedure they were able to find a 95 % occlusion of one of major coronary vessels. Patient was able to received a drug eluting stent and was transferred to the CCU. Patient during the hospital stay improved and actually made a full recovery. But the cause of the arrhythmia was still up for the discussion. After talking with the interventional cardiologist and electrophysiologist it was determined that it was non-ischemic arrhythmia due to no elevation of troponin. These are the types of cases that pushed me towards cardiology because the cases are very complex and they always keep you on your feet. All the best with your application, Dr. Qureashi! Swipe to see other insights he has to share with future applicants! #CardiologyFellowship #Cardiology #LomaLindaCardiology #Fellowship #LLCardiology #LLUCardiology #lluimresidency 1) When did you start the formal application process? I started the application process in the middle of my intern year. I would try to find research opportunities and joined multiple projects. Throughout my second year, I continued projects and tried to have as many publications as I could. Also along the way, it is important to have a mentor who will help guide you with projects. During the end of my second year I started asking for LORs. The application cycle usually starts the beginning of your third year in July so it’s important to have all components of the application ready by then. 2) Who should residents ask for LOR? Is it just cardiologists or can they ask anyone? Typically you need to have 2-3 LOR from cardiologists and 1 from your program director. 3) How many interviews did you go on and how many should residents aim for? I am currently in the application process but from what I hear 6 interviews should be a good amount of interviews. 4) What are the similarities or differences between residency and fellowship interviews? They are similar in many ways - you want to be genuine. As I am preparing for interviews now, I believe I have more stories and experiences that I could talk about when compared to my residency interviews. 5) What are important things to keep in mind when evaluating fellowship programs? Location Location Location! I think that plays a big role when applying for programs.

Riverside Reels, part 1: Ever wonder what the Riverside County Hospital Rotation looks like? Here’s a little peak at the call room where all four teams meet! There are four teams of different colors (red, yellow, green, blue) that can carry up to 20 patients each. The call room has computers lined up on both sides of the room, with a printer for printing your lists. It’s a busy rotation, but Riverside County has a LOT of interesting pathology. Plus, did you know that we also serve prison patients there? It’s a great learning environment all around! #RiversideReels #Sunday #Callroom #Residency #CountyHospital #RUHS #lluimresidency
