April is Distracted Driving Awareness Month and The Livermore Police Department encourages drivers to give the phone a break and focus on the road. In the month of April, L.P.D. will have additional officers on patrol specifically looking for drivers who violate the state’s hands-free cell phone law.... When you are driving, give the phone a rest, Livermore Police Sergeant Justin Lash said. A driver’s number one focus should be on the road. Anything that distracts you from the task of driving, especially a phone, puts yourself and others at risk. According to the 2020 California Statewide Public Opinion Survey, more than 75% of surveyed drivers listed Distracted Driving because of TEXTING as their biggest safety concern. Not driving distracted is a simple, but significant behavior change, Sgt. Lash said. The goal is to increase compliance with the hands-free cell phone law and keep people safe. Under current law, drivers are not allowed to hold a phone or other electronic device while behind the wheel. Drivers under 18 are not allowed to use a phone for any reason, including hands-free. If you need to make a call or send a text, pull over and park at a safe location. Drivers should silence their phones or put the phone out of reach, such as the glove box or trunk. Funding for distracted driving enforcement operations are provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

NATIONAL TAKE DOWN TOBACCO DAY The tobacco industry has a long history of targeting vulnerable communities, especially youth, to sell their products to. Now, cities across the country are taking bold action to take down enticingly sweet but extremely harmful tobacco. Livermore is proud to be one of the first local municipalities in the state to protect our kids from flavored tobacco products and, since then, over a hundred jurisdictions have joined us. We want to ensure that Livermore is a safe and healthy place to live, work, study, and play for all! Learn more about the effects of flavored tobacco at www.flavorshookkids.org

Scam Alert for all you Venmo users out there... Be on alert if money mysteriously appears in your Venmo Account! The scammer will send you money using a stolen credit card, followed by a friendly message stating the payment was a mistake, and ask you to kindly refund the money. Wanting to do the right thing, you're more than happy to do so, right?..... DON'T!! The problem with refunding the money is when the original victim of the stolen credit card notifies their bank to re...port the fraudulent activity, Venmo will take back the money from your account. If you refund money to the scammer before Venmo reverses the transaction, you’re on the hook for the funds. So the best thing you can do is LEAVE THE MONEY IN YOUR VENMO ACCOUNT! If it was truly sent by mistake, the sender can sort it out with Venmo and have the transaction reversed.

Over the weekend, three of your LPD Officers attended the annual (modified) Night To Shine Event. This year was hosted as a drive-thru event at Blue Oaks Church in Pleasanton. Officers were invited to display LPD vehicles, including LPD's car '54, while waving and maybe showing off a few dance moves too. Participants drove through the event with their parents/caretakers. While the event was much different this year, it definitely impacted those who came and left them with bea...utiful smiles on their faces! If you didn't know... Night to Shine is typically hosted as a prom night experience for people with special needs, aged 14 and older. This is a worldwide event, but the Tri-Valley chapter hosts one of the largest events (and our personal favorite) Thank you to the coordinators, donors, and volunteers involved in this special event! https://www.ntstrivalley.org/

Officer Miranda was so lucky to spend her shift with K9 Officers Drax and Max. This was an extra special treat since K9 Max and his handler, Officer Green, just graduated handler school and are now certified to work patrol as a dynamic duo. Congratulations Officer Green and K9 Max... you have already made your namesake, the late and great Officer Max Messina, and your family at LPD proud!!

Be Safe, Be Sober This Holiday Season National Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over Campaign Begins Dec. 14 Livermore, Calif. This holiday season, Livermore Police Department wants to remind the public about the importance of being safe and sober when you are driving.... While the COVID-19 pandemic is changing how we celebrate the holidays, the Livermore Police Department is dedicated to keeping the public safe and urges people to stay at home or use a designated sober driver if you plan to drink. Starting Dec. 14 and through New Year’s Day, Livermore PD will have officers on patrol looking for drivers suspected of being under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs. The enforcement effort is part of a national campaign, Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over, intended to show zero tolerance for drunk driving and keep roads safe. This year has been challenging and difficult on all of us, Sgt. Justin Lash said. The last thing we need is more heartbreak and tragedy. Make the right choice by not driving impaired so everyone can have a safe holiday. Livermore Police reminds the public that impaired driving is not just from alcohol. Prescription medications, over-the-counter drugs and marijuana can also impair, especially in combination with alcohol and other drugs. Do your research and understand how certain drugs you are taking may affect your driving ability. Due to COVID-19, the state of California is asking residents to avoid large gatherings for the holidays to mitigate the spread of the virus. Funding for this program is provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Officer Miranda mustache you a question... Do you like her new mask? Okkkaaay... What she really wanted to ask is if you knew the Federal Trade Commission has a Consumer Information Blog? FTC's blog publishes up-to-date information on various trending scams, many of which we see happening here in our Livermore community. The blog is creatively done, while still delivering invaluable information. You can even sign up for email updates. Check it out!... https://www.consumer.ftc.gov/blog LPD strongly encourages you to not only review FTC’s website, but please consider printing the fliers they publish and hang them up at your loved senior’s home or community too!

Over the weekend we wrapped up our virtual Giving Tree event. It’s no surprise that our community came through to support in a tremendous way! To give you a little insight... These seniors, families and children asked us for items ranging from books to socks and sweaters to a small toy . We wish you could have been there with us when families and seniors received their gifts with tears filling their eyes out of sheer gratitude and joy. A special thank you to our volunt...eers who primarily coordinated and ran this event in a way that was safe for all, Kids Bike Lane for donating 16 bikes to the children this year, Piecemakers and Amador Valley Quilters for donating beautifully handmade quilts, and Advantage Solutions for donating non-perishable foods and hygiene products! Let’s not forgot the many displays of love and good deeds surrounding us this holiday season
