Looking back at Nisei Week in 1952, when Bunkado (which was a record store at the time!) had an excellent view of the Bunkado float making its stride through ...Little Tokyo during the Nisei Week Parade. Mitsuye Suzuki, "sumo no obasan," was a beautiful Issei woman who was not only a businesswoman, hotelier, healthcare worker, sumo promoter and community activis...t, she was a licensed pilot. (Traci) I don't remember the details of how an immigrant woman in her era became a pilot, but I do remember seeing a photo of her with flying gear, goggles and all. When I met her back in 1983, she must've already been in her 70s or maybe even 80s. She was mentally sharp and she was so generous with her time and in sharing her photos. I wish I had been a better historian and taken a better record of all of the things she shared.
