Oro, Spanish Barb colt. By Kay's Spanish Smoke (SBHA P-112, HOA 2029) out of Fenecia Cruce LR (SBHA P-130, HOA 2014). Born May 15, 2018.
Renegade today.
Renegade is off for training. Goals are consistent saddle training and riding, and being a good citizen in public and around other horses as a young stallion. (First photo is from the trainer. Others are while he was turned out when we went to visit him)
The 2020 Working Equitation year ended yesterday and scores have been tabulated. Frederico tied for 5th place in Region 2 Intro Division, which was very competitive. He won the Spanish Barb/Colonial Spanish Breed award, though, sadly, there was not as much competition as we would've liked due to Covid. But, he tried hard and doesn't know about winning and prizes, except that people give him attention and he can feel they're happy with him. That makes him happy.

I've always wondered about the Curly-coated horses in the Wilbur-Cruce herd. They must have been introduced way back in the late 1800s, are mentioned in Eva's book "A Beautiful, Cruel Country," (picture of passage from the book included in this post). The book is an autobiography by Eva Antonia Wilbur-Cruce, in which she recalls her childhood around 1910ish or 1915ish. Also, Bob Zimmerman, Eva's nephew, remembers seeing curly-coated horses at the ranch (screenshots of my que...stions to him and his response attached). The passage says the horses bought from Juan Sepulveda were 25 broodmares. This, combined with the knowledge that there were Curly coated horse on the WC ranch much later, suggests that some founding, Wilbur-Cruce stallion(s) were Curly coated. It sounds like the stallion(s) were likely nice, Spanish type be cause the next paragraph refers to the Wilbur-Cruce horses as Criollos. Interesting history.

"And then he thought of Brislawn's words: 'He's a Medicine Hat! To the Injuns he's big medicine. He's sacred. A god. Nothing can harm his rider. No slingstone, nor arrow. No Rifle ball, nor lightning.' " From Marguerite Henry's book, San Domingo.
Some of the current students from Pacific Coast Horseshoeing School gave the horses trims. This was the first group of horses (from the mare pasture) this morning. Real nice group of students.
