#BlindnessFacts: It is estimated that there are only about 70,000-100,000 people in the United States who are deaf-blind. That is approximately 0.02-0.03% of the nation’s population. It can be very difficult to find services and resources for people that represent such a small population, however here at #LightHouseSF we believe in serving as many members of our community as possible. We offer a fantastic program devoted to the needs of the deaf-blind community provided by deaf-blind staff. To learn more about LightHouse’s incredible programs and dedicated staff members, you can visit our website at LightHouse-sf.org. Happy #WhiteCaneDay, everyone! #BlindnessFcats: Did you know that today marks the 56th Anniversary of the declaration of White Cane Day in the United States? On October 15, 1964, a joint resolution by the United States Congress was signed into law. President Lyndon B. Johnson signed the first White Cane Day proclamation just a few hours later. Did you also know that today marks the 234th birthday of James Holman? Holman was a 19th century British explorer. Known as The Blin...d Traveler, Holman was the most prolific private traveler of anyone, blind or sighted, before the era of modern transportation. James Holman is also the namesake for LightHouse’s #HolmanPrize for #BlindAmbition, an award given annually to three blind people with ambitious ideas. There is so much to celebrate in the blind community today! Happy White Cane Day to all our #BlindAndProud friends! Photo Caption: A group of blind people with white canes walking together.
