Today is Wear Purple for Platelets Day!. This event, celebrated on the last Friday in September, supports those suffering from Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura (ITP), a disease that causes excessive bleeding, bruising and fatigue due to low levels of platelets (cells that enable blood to clot). Unfortunately, there are many unknowns about ITP what causes it, how to fully cure it and many people haven’t even heard of it. To learn more about ITP click on the photo below.
The Lifeline family has been steadily expanding over the past year (growing our own future crew members). So many new babies have blessed our Lifeline family members! Two more joined just this past week. One more to go, in October, to complete our year of babies! Congratulations to all of the new parents. You know who you are!
It is the final week of National Preparedeness Month. This week the focus is on talking to your kids about preparing for emergencies and what to do in case you are separated. Reassure them that they have a role to play in being ready for disaster by providing information about how they can get involved. Visit https://www.ready.gov/kids for some games and resources that will help children with being emergency prepared!
We love where we live! Grab your family, or come alone, and help keep our beaches beautiful. We have had extra visitors this summer, due to Covid-19 and people chasing open beaches. So, there is extra need to care for, and clean, our coast. This is a great opportunity to get outside, enjoy nature socially distanced, take in the beauty of your own backyard beaches, and give back to the community! Have a great weekend Ventura County

Wildfires have our days looking like evenings! Here are five recommendations if you live in or are visiting an area being impacted by wildfire smoke. *Keep your windows closed. *Try not to use a swamp cooler. Air conditioning units are better and can be used. *Avoid outdoor exercise or activities.... *Not all masks will work to filter out smoke and fire particles. Dust and surgical-style masks do not filter out the particulates in the air from a fire. *Use any breathing medications like asthma inhalers as prescribed, but if your child is relying on them more than every four hours, or if they are breathing with more difficulty, see a doctor. National Preparedness Month STEP 2: Build A Kit After an emergency, you may need to survive on your own for several days. Being prepared means having your own food, water and other supplies to last for several days. A disaster supplies kit is a collection of basic items your household may need in the event of an emergency.... Make sure your emergency kit is stocked with the items on the checklist below. Most of the items are inexpensive and easy to find and any one of them could save your life. For more tips and steps visit Ready.gov See more

September is National Preparedness Month Step 1 of Disaster Preparedness: MAKE A PLAN ! Your family may not be together if a disaster strikes, so it is important to know which types of disasters could affect your area. Know how you’ll contact one another and reconnect if separated. Establish a family meeting place that’s familiar and easy to find.... Put a plan together by discussing the questions below with your family, friends or household to start your emergency plan: *How will I receive emergency alerts and warnings? *What is my shelter plan? *What is my evacuation route? *What is my family/household communication plan? *Do I need to update my emergency preparedness kit? *Check with the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and update my emergency plans due to Coronavirus. *Get cloth face coverings (for everyone over 2 years old), disinfectants, and check my sheltering plan
Quite often Lifeline Medics and EMT respond to car crashes and motorcycle accidents where the vehicle and victim have gone over the side of the road. These are often remote rescues with tricky terrain. This accident required all of the EMS agencies to respond. A well-coordinated rescue involving Fire to hoist victim to the road, Lifeline to transport critical victims to Air Squad helicopter, and then ground transport any less critical victims. Great job done by all !!! The county is so thankful for your lifesaving expertise and care! Please drive safely, Ventura County residents
As we experience this long spell of hot weather, please be extra aware of the symptoms of heat exhaustion!
If you, or someone you know, uses a medical device requiring power you know how worrisome power outages can be! Our recent hot weather and fire danger brings rolling power outages at times. SCE wants to make sure customers using powered medical equipment can stay safe! Please click the link below to see how you can obtain a free backup battery for your medical equipment. COVID-19 AND BREASTFEEDING If you are breastfeeding and have symptoms of or confirmed COVID-19, take steps to avoid spreading the virus to your baby: Wash your hands before touching your baby Wear a cloth face covering, if possible, while feeding at the breast... Wash your hands before touching pump or bottle parts and clean all parts after each use Breast milk is the best source of nutrition for most infants. We do not know whether mothers with COVID-19 can transmit the virus via breast milk, but the limited data available suggest this is not likely. Whether and how to start or continue breastfeeding should be determined by the mother in coordination with her family and healthcare providers. A mother with confirmed COVID-19 should be counseled to take precautions to avoid spreading the virus to her infant, including handwashing and wearing a cloth face covering. @NICHQ #NationalBreastfeedingMonth See more
August is NATIONAL BREASTFEEDING MONTH ! Research has shown that being breastfed can lead to a healthier life for babies. The many health benefits include: Protection against many common infections... Nutritionally balanced meals Better survival for the first year of life AND lowered risk for conditions such as: Allergies Asthma Obesity Type 2 Diabetes Sudden Infant Death Syndrome In addition to these benefits, breast milk has also been found to include many nutrients, vitamins and antibodies which contribute to the development of everything from babies’ immune to digestive systems.
Stay safe and cool Ventura County

The risk of hepatitis C for seniors- According to the CDC report, more than 75 percent of the adults currently living with hepatitis C were born between 1945 and 1965 - meaning older adults are five times more likely to have the disease than any other age group. While medications will help reduce the damages of hepatitis C, patients will need to focus on some healthy living choices on their own as well. Eating well and exercising are important for seniors' liver health. Diets rich in iron and protein are beneficial. Seniors should eat plenty of grains, fruits and vegetables as well, and need to avoid salty, sugary and fatty foods. Poor diets can exacerbate liver problems. Patients will need to maintain a health weight, as excess body fat can harm the liver as well. For more information visit click on the photo below
Hepatitis A, hepatitis B, and hepatitis C are three types of viral hepatitis. Although each type of viral hepatitis is caused by a different virus and is spread in different ways, they all affect the liver and can cause serious health problems. For more information please visit: https://www.cdc.gov/hepatitis/awareness/index.htm
