The dynamic duo of Dustin Catfish Meridith and Paul Cartwright return to Lengthwise: The Pub on Thursday. There was a time when you’d find one of these two if not both playing on a Bakersfield stage on any given day of the week. Nowadays, however, Cartwright keeps a steady schedule as a session musician and performer in Los Angeles and Meridith has relocated to Northern California for his job as a school psychologist. The two have a natural chemistry from their years of... playing as a duo and take dynamic musical chances with fearless abandon. Audiences leave their shows with a sense of satisfaction at having witnessed some impromptu musical alchemy and it fills me with immense joy that these two can still captivate an entire room through sheer skill and heartfelt, solid delivery. Meridith’s guitar playing, especially his slide, is deceptively effortless in its fluidity. One of his trademarks is sustaining a guitar note for an impossibly long duration while taking a sip of his drink. Cartwright is a staggering phenomenon on the violin here and everywhere. The two of them perform music that runs the gamut of Americana roots, blues, rock, country and folk. If you were to distill the essence of the Allman Brothers Band and Merle Haggard, infuse it with some moonshine, and pour it into two bodies, it would be these two. This is not an exaggeration.
