A LETTER FROM OUR FOUNDER AS LEKHA INK ADAPTS TO THE COVID 19 SITUATION Dear Friends of Lekha, I am looking forward to starting my 15th summer of writing camps tomorrow. ... Please register for Lekha Writing Camps at: http://www.lekhawritingonline.com ABOUT THIS YEAR This year will look very different from previous years. Our first summer started by teaching just six children including my daughter. I taught two weeks of creative writing and publishing to three girls and three boys in a dear friend's living room. Since then, Lekha Ink, Corp. has grown and adapted. We have seen changes in the economy, technology, and in marketing practices throughout the years. With each change, we adapted and continued. 2020 saw the biggest change in our 15 years. From 23 instructors, eight interns and some volunteers, we are down to just eight instructors and two interns. Not all instructors will work this summer. Some will teach only if our usual on-site locations start up again in July with the required social distancing. If not, it will be just me and another instructor. This is indeed a big blow to Lekha Ink, as it is to every other small business. Yet I count my blessings because we, at Lekha Ink, have been able to adapt. We have learned to forge bonds with our young charges in the same way as we did while teaching them in person. I started telling stories to children remotely as we all sheltered in place. I did this as a free service with the hope that I would bring a smile to a few children, and with the knowledge that I would enjoy myself. In addition, I transitioned my regular classes by teaching the children who decided to continue with me remotely. Many families helped me on this journey by participating in my storytelling sessions, classes, and in the workshops that my colleague and I conducted. If this hadn't happened we would not be looking forward to this summer. This year, we will be conducting our camps for children between 7-14 yrs of age, instead of the wider range of 5-18 of previous years. We look forward to your continued support. As you know, both our academic writing and creative writing camps are a lot of fun and come in affordable packages. This time, as the programs go virtual, the timings are such that children from all over North America can participate. Dear Friends of Lekha, I hope you are all doing well and staying safe. This summer's writing camps are going to look very different than what it did in the past years. It is essential to keep all our families safe and healthy, so we are working with the cities to understand how Lekha can conduct its city-run camps safely. Currently the cities of Fremont, Pleasanton, San Ramon. and Millbrae have decided to cancel summer classes and camps for the month of June. We are still wa...iting for the decision by the city of Tracy. We might conduct camps in city-run locations in July and August if social distancing protocols can be adhered to. We have cancelled all our in-person camps that we usually conduct in Cupertino, Dublin, San Jose, Redwood City, Mountain View, Milpitas, and Mountain House. Instead of in-person classes we will conduct nine weeks of online camps over Zoom. I started teaching my year-long classes over Zoom on March 1st, as soon as we understood that teaching in person could be harmful for students and their families. Miss. Radhika and I conducted shortened spring workshops over Zoom and have continued to conduct two-day workshops since. These classes have been different but the students and we have enjoyed them thoroughly. Lekha's staff and I look forward to providing the same quality service that we have provided all these years, while staying safe at home until everything goes back to normal.
