March 14th, 6:30pm PST / 7:30pm MST Melissa Wei-Tsing Inouye: God's Sandbox: Believing and Belonging in a Broken World When life gets scary and overwhelming, they say, turn to God--to faith--to Church. So I did this, and what happened? Everything got 99.98 times scarier and more overwhelming. When society blows you this way and that, they say, cleave fast to the gospel culture. So I did this, and what happened? The thing I was clutching swelled enormously, then exploded in a thousand different directions. So when death came for me, I sat down in God's hellish sandbox and wept. And my sisters and brothers crept in, weeping, and sat. And sat. Melissa Wei-Tsing Inouye is a Senior Lecturer in Asian Studies at the University of Auckland and Historian at the Church History Department of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She earned her degree in East Asian Languages and Civilizations from Harvard University. Her book, China and the True Jesus: Charisma and Organization in a Chinese Christian Church (Oxford, 2019) uses a Pentecostal church founded in Beijing in 1917 to understand the history of modern China. She is also the author of a memoir, Crossings: a bald Asian American Latter-day Saint woman scholar's ventures through life, death, cancer, and motherhood (not necessarily in that order) (Deseret Book and BYU Maxwell Institute, 2019). ZOOM Virtual Fireside with Chase Kirkham on Studying History as an Act of Worship: An Introduction to the Joseph Smith Papers January 10, 6:30 pm PST / 7:30 pm MST Zoom ID: 967 9285 8660 https://cgu.zoom.us/j/96792858660... BY STUDY AND FAITH The Howard W. Hunter Foundation and Claremont Mormon Studies Council are pleased to carry on with our By Study and Faith Virtual Fireside series, featuring some of the most distinguished Latter-day Saint disciple/scholars. Our speakers will continue addressing the compelling issues of our time - issues affecting the lives of all of us who are trying to navigate a life of faith, hope, and charity in a troubled and often divisive world. Our prior firesides have included preeminent scholars Richard Bushman, Thomas Griffith, and Neylan McBaine. January 10, 6:30pm PST / 7:30pm MST: Chase Kirkham on Studying History as an Act of Worship: An Introduction to the Joseph Smith Papers In January 2021, Latter-day Saints will commence a year-long study of the Doctrine and Covenants. The revelations found in this book of scripture can be challenging to understand because much of their historical context is missing. One resource that can help fill in these contextual gaps is the Joseph Smith Papers. Church historian and CGU alum (PhD 2018) Chase Kirkham will explain what the Joseph Smith Papers are and how Latter-day Saints can use the project’s scholarship in their personal study. Kirkham will also address why church members have been commanded to study history and will show that learning about the past is one way to worship God. Chase Kirkham is a historian with the Church History Department in Salt Lake City, Utah, where he works as a documentary editor on the Joseph Smith Papers Project. Kirkham’s work, which involves annotating letters, Council of Fifty documents, and sermons, will appear in Documents, Volume 15. While at the project, Kirkham has also chaired the annual Joseph Smith Papers conference in 2019 and 2020. He graduated from Claremont Graduate University in 2018, earning a PhD in religious studies. His dissertation examined how early American prophets created time. LOOKING AHEAD: February 7, 2021: "Voices from the Past: What We Learn About Faith and History from the Making of Saints" with Jed Woodworth and Lisa Olsen Tait March 14, 2021: Melissa Inouye To be notified of future events: https://mormonstudies.cgu.edu/signup/
