A message from Sidharth Kakkar, Freckle CEO. Renaissance is committed to making changes and ensuring nothing like this ever happens again. We wanted to respond to the request for additional information. Here’s what happened and the actions we are taking:... - In the early days of Freckle’s rapid growth, 20+ outside contractors were hired to develop ELA content. One of the contractors wrote highly offensive content, which was missed during the review process. The contractor no longer works with Freckle. - When we learned about the offensive content in March we immediately took it down and adopted the same stringent content review process used by Renaissance for their other products. We are in the process of reviewing all existing content in Freckle, to make sure no such mistake ever happens again. - The review process includes internal and external DEI personnel assisting us to improve our product and guidelines for more stringent and precise checks for bias. We have trainedand will continue to trainour content authoring team to ensure the guidelines are understood and consistently adhered to. - We have started plans to bring consultants and trainers to address bias for our company at large. An improved understanding for everyone within the organization as it pertains to bias, anti-racism, diversity, equity, and inclusion will only help us to improve our content. - We are also looking at ways to leverage our Freckle Ambassadors and the many teachers employed across Renaissance to continue to find ways to improve our content. We thank you for engaging in this conversation and for giving us the opportunity to learn and grow, to do better, and be better so together we can create lasting change.

In March of 2020, we discovered inappropriate content in our Freckle Education platform. While the harm caused by this cannot be undone, this content was immediately removed and we have implemented rigorous steps in our review process to eliminate future mistakes. There is no excuse. This content is unacceptable and does not represent the culture and beliefs at Renaissance and we apologize. We are committed to our mission of inclusion to accelerate learning for all. We take this matter very seriously and we are taking all steps necessary to ensure this does not occur again. We are rolling out mandatory diversity, equity, and inclusion dialogue sessions for our employees this month. Thank you to everyone who has brought this issue to our attention. We are listening, improving, and committed to do better.
