[Español sigue] Los Angeles State Historic Park honors the passing of Tongva elder Julia Bogany. Julia is a leader who’s efforts to raise awareness of the Tongva will continue to echo throughout Los Angeles County and beyond. Heavily involved in her community, she also made the time to be a teacher and consultant to countless organizations and government agencies like ours where indigenous voices are absent within the staff. We thank Julia for working with us and will contin...ue to apply what she’s taught us in future endeavors. Her legacy lives on. More information on her and her work can be found at the link in our bio and at her personal account @julia_bogany ... From Debra Scacco @debrascaccostudio: Dear friends, We hope this finds you safe and as well can be. We are writing today with a heavy-hearted invitation to co-create a community memorial honoring those lost during COVID, and all who love them. This project is collaboratively initiated by Veronique d'Entremont, Joel Garcia, iris yirei hu and Debra Scacco.... Since July 2020, we have met weekly in the context of a virtual artist-in-residence program. Through this process, we have shared personal experiences of the pandemic, including the pain of being denied the ritual of gathering and honoring in grief. From these discussions, the idea rose to create a collective living memorial. As we set out to honor those we’ve lost and those who love them, Joel’s immediate family experienced their own tragic COVID loss. As a result, we felt an urgency to create Living Memorial Garden. The project begins with the surround of an oak tree at Los Angeles State Historic Park. The concept is simple: you are invited to create a fabric tie in honor of your loved one(s), and to share this tie with community on the protective surround of the oak tree. You are welcome to create many ties, as many have experienced multiple losses. You may choose to share their name, but this is not required. We encourage you to share your relation (sister, neighbor, friend, father) as every individual represents a lifetime of relationships to others. The co-creation of this work acknowledges that each loss is felt by so many who, during COVID times, may not have the opportunity to grieve together. You are welcome to come personally and place a tie yourself or send your loved one's name via the link below. We will place the tie on your behalf. https://bit.ly/livingmemorialgarden Please reach out to me or any of the other artists with questions or concerns: [email protected] [email protected] [email protected] [email protected] Warmly, Veronique, Joel, iris and Debra @livingmemorialgarden#livingmemorialgarden

LASHP recognizes Black contributions to the development of this country, the state and the industry that made the Southern Pacific Railroad company, providing California this park site. Early in railroad history, mid 1800’s, miles of railroad tracks were tediously laid (primarily in the south) by Black men and women as slaves that the railroad companies owned, rented slaves and/or hired freedmen. Later when train locomotives were up and running, Black men and women cont...inued to serve: For Black men, a popular position was that of the Pullman porter; someone who handled passenger’s luggage and tidied their beds, among other things. White passengers often never bothered to learn Pullman’s names, and were referred to as George, after the creator of the sleeping car, George Pullman. Black men were also burdened with the dangerous task of hopping on and into freight cars to manually turn a brake wheel to eventually stop the whole train. Many individuals lost their lives as brakeman as they had to do this task regardless of outdoor conditions such as snowstorms, rain and bumpy rides. Many slipped and fell to their deaths until air brakes and automatic couplers were invented. Black women were often nannies. Not only did they entertain children, but they also did hair, gave manicures, bathed people and were nurses. Pullmen and nannies provided an experience that the white middle class couldn’t otherwise afford at home, that of servitude. It was appealing, particularly for overnight train rides where they could escape their economic class for a few nights. Railroad work was attractive to the Black community as it offered a relatively good and secure job for the time compared to other positions typically available to freedmen such as steel workers, coal miners, loggers and work in agriculture. The song "Berta Berta" by Branford Marsalis highlights this Berta marry a railroad man dollar in your hand. Song in bio! Overwhelming railroad history is predominantly white, presenting a false narrative that takes away recognition from exploited groups of people. Did you know that California was the first state in the nation to establish a state park? Yosemite became the first state park after President Abraham Lincoln granted the land in 1864. It became Yosemite National Park, as we know it today, in 1906. It is in California’s first State Park where some of the world’s first Park Rangers worked. These Park Rangers were actually six segregated regiments of the U.S. Army, created in 1866. They were later consolidated into 4 regiments ...consisting of the 9th and 10th Calvary and the 24th and 25th infantry. Nicknamed the Buffalo Soldiers, they were given this name by the Cheyenne and other Plains Native Americans who drew a resemblance between the soldier’s dark curly hair, and the thick fur nestled between buffalos’ horns. To learn more about the Buffalo Soldiers check out this amazing video by Yosemite National Park Ranger, Shelton Johnson, linked below: https://www.instagram.com/tv/CKxNkc6gV12/ : 24th Infantry conducting a mounted patrol of Yosemite in 1899. ... As Hispanic Heritage Month comes to an end we’d like to highlight the Promotorx, a group of dedicated volunteers and park ambassadors They have been supporting us since day 1, before the park’s grand opening! Coming together in 2016, they played the crucial role of connecting the park with the surrounding communities; the people. Since then they’ve hosted their own programs, invited friends, families and neighbors to camp, paint, heal, make a s’more and more. They’ve become popular among park regulars, our partners, the CA State Park system, local politicians and beyond... we couldn’t be prouder to call them our friends and have them as a unit of our park fam! During these times, we come to recognize the effort of establishing universal and equitable access to greenspace as a fundamental human right. These outdoor spaces are not only a resource for public health but also shape the surrounding community. Our Community Engagement team at LASHP was fortunate to go on a guided walking tour with director and founder of @boyleheightshistorystudios , Shmuel Gonzales (aka @barrioboychik). As he took us back in time, we walked through Holle...nbeck Park, a 20 acre park created by Elizabeth Hollenbeck and former Los Angeles mayor William Workman in the 1890s. This park was developed to attract people to the Boyle Heights neighborhood. As Shmuel mentions, Parks are integral to setting the tone of the neighborhood and what is going to come into that neighborhood. Soon after Hollenbeck Park was dedicated, we learn of Hollenbeck’s philanthropic contribution in establishing Hollenbeck Home for the Aged- a free assistant living home for destitute senior citizens. Then, other religious and cultural non-profits came into the neighborhood to provide free housing resources to immigrant senior citizens. Boyle Heights becomes a destination for the working class immigrants in need of a home. As we absorbed the history of Boyle Heights, we began to understand that the strong presence of community is a result of it’s roots in philanthropy, multicultural backgrounds, social justice and grassroots organizations. It all began because of a greenspace. Muchas gracias, Shmuel! Thank you for providing insight into your neighborhood. We appreciate the time you spent with us. As an activist historian, your work allows us and others to bridge the gap between their identity and their community. We highly encourage our park patrons to book a private visit to the Boyle Heights History Studios. Shmuel also provides private household or small group walking tours during the weekdays. Also, look into supporting his weekend tours featuring haunted historic sites, Jewish History, and Boyle Heights Heritage. Email: [email protected] Office phone: 323-90-BOYLE or 323-902-6953. Evening Primrose (Oenothera biennis) are blooming and bringing color into the wetlands. These fragrant native plants are visited by bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds for their nectar. The leaves, stems, and flowers can be eaten raw or cooked. The seeds can be cultivated to produce an oil that contains gamma-linolenic acid (omega-6 fatty acid) which helps ease eczema, clear acne and has anti-inflammatory properties to relieve arthritis. #LosAngelesStateHistoricPark #LAStateHistoricPark #LASHP #CaliforniaStatePark #EveningPrimrose #nativeflowers

Rio De Los Angeles State Park is a unique 40 acre park along the LA River. One of the many highlights of this park is the scent garden designed by Margaret Oakley Otto of Oakley Gardens during her tenure at California State Parks Foundation. The aroma of these native plants not only entice park visitors but attract our pollinator friends such as bees, butterflies and birds while promoting biodiversity within the park. There are a variety of sages such as white sage, purple sage, and black sage, coyote mint and cowboy cologne. These native plants are also our connection to the Indigenous People of this land. We hope that you are able to safely visit @riodelosangelessp and explore the scent garden. #RioDeLosAngelesStatePark #CaliforniaStatePark #InventYourAdventure
