Picture this: You start hearing sirens near your neighborhood. As the sirens get closer, you peek out the window and see a lot of deputies on foot and some patr...ol cars blocking the street. You may even hear the helicopter above or shining spotlights over your home and on your street. You realize, you are in the middle of a containment. What should you do? Containments are set up when deputies believe a suspect is in a specific area. Usually, not always, but usually, containments are established for a felony or violent crime suspect. While this may be scary for residents in the neighborhood, there's a few things you can do to stay safe and help our deputies. 1. Stay indoors. Don't walk outside, don't go up to the deputies to ask what is going on and don't try to get the best LIVE video and expose yourself by walking outside. 2. Lock your doors and windows. Make sure no one can enter your home through an unsecure window or door. 3. Do not open the door for anyone! If a deputy comes to your door, make sure they identify themselves and show you their badge through the peephole. Suspects could be dangerous and willing to do anything to gain entry into your home. 4. Report anything suspicious that you see. No one knows your home, backyard and neighborhood better than yourself! If you know you closed the door to your shed and now see it open, call us. If you see the tarp to your boat pulled back, call us. Tips from residents often lead us to the suspect we are looking for. 5. Finally, be patient. We absolutely understand the inconvenience we place on residents who can't leave or go into their homes during containments. We ask you to be patient with our deputies and dispatchers. Please understand that our dispatchers will not be able to release information such as the suspect's description in the middle of the incident. We value your time and don't take it lightly, and will clear up the containment as soon as possible. While containments in your area may be scary, our deputies will do all they can to keep you safe. Together, we make a great team! #LASD #AV411 #myherowearsabadge

The first Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department body-worn cameras will be in use and on the streets starting tonight at the first five stations: Century, Lanc...aster, Lakewood, Industry, and West Hollywood. Personnel are currently being trained & equipped. Personnel assigned to Compton station and East LA Station will be next. Sheriff Alex Villanueva said, "Since my first week in office, we started working towards implementing body worn cameras for the LASD. Today, that became a reality when we kicked off our very first body-worn camera equipment issue and training class. Body-worn cameras provide the opportunity to record interactions between law enforcement and the public. They also add a new measure in achieving fair and impartial treatment of persons who become involved in the criminal justice system. Body-worn cameras will provide increased opportunity to review our performance following critical incidents, reduce force and complaints, reduce allegations of misconduct, showcase exemplary work, and provide additional evidence in criminal matters." For the next eighteen months, the Department will continue to network and allocate upgrades at each patrol station until all stations are on board.

It's October 1st and we celebrate Breast Cancer Awareness Month! Breast Cancer Awareness Month is a health campaign organized by major breast cancer charities e...very October to increase awareness of the disease and to raise funds for research into its cause, prevention, diagnosis, treatment and cure. The campaign also offers information and support to those affected by breast cancer. About 1 in 8 U.S. women will develop invasive breast cancer over the course of her lifetime. We encourage our residents to talk to their care provider and schedule their annual exam. Early detection can save your life. And to our warriors, survivors and family members who have lost a loved one, we are carrying you on our shoulders. My hero wears a badge... and in October, a pink patch. #LASD #AV411 #BreastCancerAwarenessMonth #pinkpatchproject #myherowearsabadge

19 years ago today, 3,263 people went to bed preparing for their day in New York City tomorrow. By 10:00am on September 11, 2001, those 3,000 people, including... 343 firefighters, 60 police officers and 8 EMT’s would be gone. On the night before one of the most tragic days in our Nation’s history, let us take a moment to pay our respects to the family, friends and loved ones lost that day. But let us also take a moment to remember how united we all felt in the aftermath. As we struggle through difficult times across our country 19 years later, let us remember how our country came together, strong, united and ready to overcome this tragic day. We can do it again. We will never forget. #LASD #AV411 #myherowearsabadge
