We’re excited to uplift the work of one of our amazing Board Members, Gibrán Papaloyaotl Güido. Congratulations on the upcoming release of this anthology set! About this book: Bringing together a unique collection of narrative accounts based on the lived experience of queer Chicano/Mexicano sons, this book explores fathers, fathering, and fatherhood. In many ways, the contributors reveal the significance of fathering and representations of fatherhood in the context of queer... male sexuality and identity across generations, cultures, class, and Mexican immigrant and Mexican American families. They further reveal how father figuresgodfathers, grandfathers, and othersmay nurture and express love and hope for the queer young men in their extended family. Divided into six sections, the book addresses the complexity of father-queer son relationships; family dynamics; the impact of neurodiverse mental health issues; the erotic, unsafe, and taboo qualities of desire; encounters with absent, estranged or emotionally distant fathers; and a critical analysis of father and queer son relationships in Chicano/Latino literature and film. Last week, a horrific act of domestic terrorism claimed the lives of eight people, six of whom were of Asian descent and seven of whom were women. The spike in violence against the AAPI community is tied to intertwined systems of oppression tied to social identity. While the spike in xenophobic violence against the AAPI community has increased since COVID-19 began, it is part of an overreaching problem that perpetuates racism against Black, Brown and Indigenous communities. We are writing to stand in solidarity with the AAPI community as well as all other marginalized communities impacted by the ongoing harm associated with racism, white supremacy and misogyny. The People’s Collective for Justice and Liberation will be hosting this critical conversation on Saturday, March 27th. Click on the link to register for the town hall.

Is No. 1 Fifth Avenue a potential LGBTQ+ historic resource for the City of San Diego? 3845 Fifth Avenue is the home of No. 1 Fifth. 3847 Fifth is the home of th...e retail store next door. An historic report was submitted to the San Diego Historic Resources Board staff on whether 3845-3847 Fifth Avenue has any historical signifcance. These reports are usually submitteed when a building is more than 45 years old and there is a potential for development and/or demolition. The preliminary report submitted indicates 3845 Fifth Avenue, the home of No.1 Fifth, has not historic significance to San Diego's LGBTQ+ community. nor is 3847 Fifth Avenue No. 1 Fifth has been an important site for our community since the early 1980s (1981). Being able to be oneself, meet discretely, attend a community fundraiser for HIV/AIDs, chat with Imperial Court Emperor #1 or just have fun. This bar has served us and is associated with Lou and Carol Arko and others in our history. Share your story about No 1 Fifth Avenue here. Tell why this bar was important to you. If you want to comment on the historic report you must do so by Monday March 22. If you want to read the report or want more information DM or send an email to [email protected] This is an important site for Hillcrest and San Diego's LGBTQ+ community history.

The San Francisco Planning Department is writing the Landmark nomination for the longtime home of lesbian-rights pioneers Phyllis Lyon and Del Martin and needs ...our help finding historical background information on the property. Please feel free to share this request with your networks. Do you have photographs of the property (exterior/interior, historic/current) that you’d be willing to share? Did you attend or have documentation of important meetings, parties, events, etc. that were held inside the house or on the property (i.e., the backyard and adjacent garden)? Do you have information about the time Speaker Nancy Pelosi (or other important public figures) addressed a group of women in the living room of the house? Do you have documentation (or personal stories) about Lyon and Martin and their residence in the broader historical context of lesbian and LGBTQ civil rights history? For instance, how does the Lyon-Martin House compare or contrast with the Castro Camera and Harvey Milk Residence? Or with other personal residences of civil rights leaders and/or with other properties that have been identified elsewhere in the US that have similar historical associations? Posts your comments below or contact Pilar LaValley, the planner who is writing the Landmark nomination, at [email protected].

Los Angeles: One of the city's oldest continuously operating gay bars, Oil Can Harry's Los Angeles, has closed after more than half a century in operation. Orig...inal owner Bert Charot and his business partner, Bob Tomasino, opened the popular dance bar in 1968 in a building that had previously housed a burlesque club. From the perspective of the time, a gay bar moving in was simply one scarcely tolerated vice business replacing another. In an interview marking the club's 50th anniversary, manager Tommy Young recalled that era: "There really was no hiding place there was, and still is, a spy hole in the door where patrons would be looked at before entering.... When men were dancing with men, or women dancing with women, if the police came to the door, they would look out the spy hole and if it was the police there was ... a siren that would be set off. The couples would just switch partners from man to man, or woman to woman, to woman to man, and woman to man." Oil Can Harry's thrived in the more open atmosphere of the 1970s when routine police raids of gay bars came to an end. And it survived the dark years of the AIDS crisis when many gay nightlife establishments lost much of their clientele. The bar sustained its support for the community by hosting numerous fundraisers for AIDS services organizations. The club has long been known for its theme nights reaching out to patrons with diverse interests. According to the bar's website, "Oil Can Harry’s has hosted or partnered with the Wranglers, LA Rodeo, LA Band of Brothers, Silverstreak Softball, Los Angeles Leather Coalition, Gay Men’s Choir, The Troupers, The Flos, Martha Wash, Christopher St. West/LA Pride, Valley Pride and countless other organizations and entertainers. Throughout the years Oil Can Harry’s has been many things to its customers, but most importantly a place they can call their own. WEHO TIMES reports that Oil Can Harry's had closed temporarily at the start of the coronavirus pandemic lockdown but had planned to reopen when health authorities allowed. In the meantime, the landlord sold the building to a new owner who has declined to renew the club's lease, planning to instead open a jazz club. The building that housed Oil Can Harry's is located at 11502 Ventura Blvd. in the Studio City neighborhood. If you have memories or photos of the club, please post a comment.
