What does AfroLatinx Futurism looks like? Join the panel discussion with artist Marton Robinson and scholar/curator Valorie D. Thomas in conversation online via Zoom on Thursday July 22, 2021 from 6:30 pm to 7:30 pm PST. Costa Rican artist and facilitator Marton Robinson has an interdisciplinary background informed by his studies in both Physical Education and Art and Visual Communication. Robinson’s art, which is informed mainly by African-American traditions, challenges the... conventional representations of black identities in art history, mainstream culture, and the official national narratives, especially those of Costa Rica. Robinson’s work exposes the nuances present in the Afro-Latino experience, enriching the critical discourse of contemporary works of the African Diaspora. Valorie D. Thomas, Phebe Estelle Spalding Professor of English and Africana Studies at Pomona College, is an interdisciplinary scholar of African Diaspora literature, visual culture, Afrxfuturism and the neuroscience of decolonial healing. Valorie Thomas originated the concept of Diasporic Vertigo as a motif of decolonization. Thomas also studies film and visual art, has an ongoing interest in the connections between writing, art and social justice, and is a screenwriter. Here is a great opportunity for all my artist friends. An opportunity to reimagine public art, and how we experience it in the places we live, shop, and play! The Department of Cultural Affairs is looking for new and established artists to participate in a citywide online showcase. For their effort, selected artists will receive one-time economic relief of $500 to $1500 according to eligibility guidelines. We’re asking artists to submit original or preexisting work that looks... towards the future and captures the sights and sounds of your neighborhood after the pandemic. The program is open until September 1, 2020 or until the first 600 applications are received. The Department of Cultural Affairs has widened the definition of artist to capture the many voices that make up our city. Artists includes anyone who works more than a quarter-time for income as an: Actor Animator Craft-maker Designer Dancer DJ Literary writer Musician Painter Poet Photographer Playwright Sculptor Videographer Artists who are selected for this one-time public funding must be willing to make their artwork or services available through various online or in-person platforms. All artists who apply, whether they receive funding or not will also be added to the public art mailing list to be considered for other upcoming public art opportunities at DCA.
