For "membrane tensions", exhibition artist #MaruGarcia (@marugfe) created a suite of new sculptural works, drawings, time-lapse video, and site-specific installation, connecting living components (in the form of cellulose composed of bacteria and yeast), or as the artist calls unpredictable collaborations, to create space for new interaction and invention. We share in the profound sadness and honor the passing of educator, cultural advisor, and Tongva Elder Julia Bogany. Through generous story sharing and an unwavering commitment, Bogany was a leader in the increase of knowledge and support of Tongva language and cultural practice. Artist iris yirei hu developed a deep relationship with Bogany, whose familial and generational experiences were woven in the work pictured here, "Lessons from Wise Woman (Tongva Elder Julia Bogany)" featured in the 2018 exhibition "Here". Bogany's legacy will continue to live in this and the many artworks and people she touched. Image: Detail from iris yirei hu's "Lessons from Wise Woman (Tongva Elder Julia Bogany)", 2018.

For "membrane tensions", exhibition artist #MaruGarcia (@marugfe) works with microorganisms, or as the artist refers to as "collaborators", to further develop the concept of symbiogenesis. As Garcia further describes, "I’ve worked in the past with SCOBY (Symbiotic culture of bacteria and yeast; the same used for Kombucha production) because this culture produces a cellulosic film that can be shaped in different ways." Don't miss your chance to learn more about the basics of ...SCOBY this Friday at 1 PM PST! The online access of the works in "Tender Calamities" not only allows for a vital perspective on the imaging of illness, but also the voyeurism within viewing the sick/disabled body. As exhibition artist #PantehaAbareshi (@pantehart) further describes, "In Methods of Care for the Precarious Body specifically, I play with these layers of removal between 'viewer' and 'body,' acknowledging the desensitization and distance that digital viewing often has and the parallels this des...ensitization has with the passive relation to illness and disability that is fostered within ableist society. There are repeated themes of passive violence, restriction and agony within the work, calling upon the viewer to engage willingly and intentionally with what makes them profoundly uncomfortable." On Saturday, February 20 at 1 PM PST, join exhibition artist #PantehaAbareshi (@pantehart) for a talk on their new works in "Tender Calamities". Read more about this program below from the artist: "This talk will focus on an examination of the work I produced for Tender Calamities, and the post-humanist approach to disability/illness that drives the work forward. My earlier performance-based work revolved heavily around the hyper-personal examination of my self, and the art...ist-as-subject methodology in documenting my body. In the past year, and in the conception of my work for Tender Calamities, I have shifted, expanded and progressed my practice to be situated within the post-human, post-material, cyborg-feminist and what I call "Xeno-Crip" body of thought- wherein the abandonment of self is crucial, and the objectification, de-personalization and objectification of my own body allows me to use it as radical material, rather than as subject. While I strive to embody the post-human abandonment of self, I also greatly value the acknowledgment of when I fail to do so. My illness is not stagnant, it is a daily struggle that seeps inevitable fear, confusion and rife emotionality into my practice and the work I produce." This program is free and open to all. #MaruGarcia’s (@marugfe) exhibition is now live at lamag.org! Transforming the Los Angeles Municipal Art Gallery into an active laboratory, "membrane tensions" features a constellation of new, site-specific works composed of cellulose. The cellulose (produced and harvested on-site at the Gallery) is used as both an intervention in the Gallery’s balcony windows and an installation of sculptural objects and light projections, alluding to the beginning of life where the delineat...ion between internal and external was essential for life forms to first emerge. In using and placing cellulose (literally and figuratively) as the medial, "membrane tensions" anticipates future exchanges through reimagining the basic building blocks of primordial relationships to create a more just biosphere. Exhibition artist #SashaBergstromKatz's (@sashabk) On the Subject of Tests" stems from the artist's interest in how a subject is re-presented to itself through examination, study and diagnosis. As huang explains, If we consider the foul lump to be a repulsive object that hijacks the Chinese American subject’s racialized body for the vocalization of others, we must consider how the lump arrives in the larynx in the first place."
