On this #laliffalumni Thursday, we’re thrilled to celebrate Rudy Valdez who was an opening night filmmaker of LALIFF’s past! Developed by Valdez, HUMMINGBIRD is coming soon to @amazonstudios The episodic series is described as a Stephen King-style American Gothic, loosely inspired by the life of Emmy-winning documentarian Rudy Valdez, who directs. It centers on members of a Mexican American family living in the Midwest that are haunted by sinister forces, while searchi...ng for the American dream. I’ve spent my career building my voice in documentaries, but more importantly telling the stories of underserved and marginalized communities through giving them agency and light, said Valdez. We can’t wait to witness your magic, Rudy!!!

As the push for equity and inclusion in Hollywood continues, this year's UCLA Hollywood Diversity Report proves we have a long road ahead. The Latinx community remains the most underrepresented group in Hollywood. We are honored to showcase our community via LALIFF but we demand action from the film and tv industry. Our voices and our stories matter. The Latino Film Institute is proud to support this report authored by our very own Ana-Christina Ramón. #diversity #equity #in...clusion https://socialsciences.ucla.edu/hollywood-diversity-report/

On this #AlumniThursday we honor the multi hyphenate @augusteverios She is a creative director, filmmaker, and musician from Los Angeles, California. Having emerged onto the music scene as a teenager, Eve cultivated a distinct aesthetic while self producing her own content out of necessity. From writing and directing music videos, doing hair and makeup on set, as well as working hand in hand with costumers and stylists; Eve has amassed a wealth of experience via creating visuals for her own music project, August Eve. Having first dreamed of being a director, music provided an opportunity to merge the two passions and build a world rich with visual language. From this all encompassing approach, Eve has lent her eye to a number of other artists and brands. Follow @augusteverios to keep up with her upcoming projects!

Even during the pandemic, filmmakers are making it happen... safely. . Filming the series during the COVID-19 pandemic has been challenging. "We're pouring everything into it. We are away from our families, we are away even from fellow castmates and crew when we are not filming. It's been a very intense and exciting journey that was full of surprises."

LALIFF 15.10.2020

We are honored to call our home team WORLD CHAMPIONS. Congratulations to the Los Angeles @dodgers on winning their first World Series Championship in 32 years. Our LA sky was lit up last night and the joy of our city is palpable. Go Dodgers! #worldserieschamps

So much of what often happens in these rooms in Hollywood is that people will divide us, he says. They’ll say, ‘Oh, Latino that’s a separate category.’ What I keep trying to say and what Campanario keeps trying to say with everything we do is that we’re not a separate category. We’re part of America. We’re part of the mainstream.

As we continue the fight for equity for Latinx folks in the media, it only makes sense to honor our very own @mrrafaelagustin who was born on this day! Rafa is the Executive Director at the Latino Film Institute where he oversees LALIFF and the @youthcinemaproject_ . Rafael is a writer on @cwjanethevirgin , he’s a @sundanceorg fellow and @laweekly named him one of the fifty most essential people in Los Angeles. When he’s not advocating for Latinx folks and writing for tv, Rafa will be penning his comedic memoir for @grandcentralpub ! We are so appreciative of your work and leadership, Rafa! Have the best day!

There were a lot of lessons learned, Agustín tells Remezcla. I’m very proud because we were able to sell out almost every single screening. Let it be known that Latinos went first. Every major film festival froze and we said, ‘We need to do this for us.’ Thank you to writers, director, actors, producers and audience members for continuing to support us. We are committed to amplifying our community, rain or shine, pandemic or not! Here's to many more years of LALIFF. Salud to us all!

LALIFF 23.08.2020

Dear Hollywood, As we come to the end of Hispanic Heritage Month in the midst of a global pandemic and continued racial injustice, many of us in the Latinx community have found it difficult to celebrate. Inspired by the activism of the Black community, many of whom also identify as Latinx, we stand in solidarity with our fellow Black writers, co-signing The WGAW Committee of Black Writers "Dear Hollywood" open letter and echoing their demands for systemic change to our industry.... #endlatinxclusion

LALIFF 06.08.2020

#NothingAboutUsWithoutUs "...the letter calls for five key things, including greenlighting projects by Latinx writers and producers, diversifying the content of what projects are greenlit in order to represent the Latinx experience as more than a monolith, advancing Latinx writers beyond diversity hires, hiring Latinx writers for more than just Latinx stories, and first and foremost, not telling stories about the Latinx experience without Latinx voices."
